odie Gerson slowly hung
her coat and the coats of her
children, taking a few deep
breaths before entering the
Chanukah party for single Jew-
ish mothers and their children at
the Eugene and Marcia Apple-
baum Jewish Parenting Center.
"I was a little nervous coming
here," said the Farmington Hills
resident, sliding a hanger into her
coat sleeves. "But I think we need
this."
In a short time, she was seat-
ed around a table decorated with
a bright yellow tablecloth and
glitter in the shape of menorahs,
chatting with other single moth-
ers. Their children played to-
gether, spinning colorful dreidels
for fistfuls of chocolate gelt before
rushing the buffet line for large
latkes, chicken and salad.
The Thursday night program,
"Putting the `U' Back in
Chanukah," was sponsored by the
Institute for Single Jewish Moth-
ers, a program of Jewish Experi-
ences For Families (JEFF).
It was the institute's first pro-
gram for both the mothers and
their children. Past programs
have included workshops, a ca-
reer night and Havdalah services
for the mothers only.
"We felt it was important to of-
fer this to the families. Sometimes
the mothers are too tired to do this
on their own," said Julia Green-
blatt, JEFF program coordinator.

For Jodie Gerson, this was the
ed for different after-dinner pro-
grams. The mothers listened to first institute program she has
the storytelling of Corinne attended since her husband's
death over two years ago.
"It really is helpful to meet peo-
ple who have the same concerns.
It makes you feel like you aren't
alone," she said. ❑

Lynda Giles, a founder of the

are essential to serve the needs
of the entire community.
"We need to let the single Abby Bechek celebrates with her
mothers know that the Jewish daughter Jasmine Bechek Howard.
