Phyllis and Albert Newman, who fund an endowment in pedi- atric audiology at the hospital, re- ceive hearing aids from around the country through the Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah of- fice. The hearing aids are restored for free by a friend of the New- mans before being sent to Israel. The Newmans learned about the need in Israel when govern- ment and insurance funding for hearing aids were phased out. They immediately began this Hadassah project. The couple publicized their new venture through Hadassah magazine and have since sent at least 3,500 hearing aids to Israel. "It's rewarding to know the program is doing so well," Ms. Newman said. "The nice part is the wonderful notes my husband gets from people thanking him for what he is doing." After reading about the New- man's collection in Hadassah magazine, U.S. Sen. Howard Metzenbaum sent the Newmans two of his own hearing aids. "I'm enclosing two that I for- merly used," wrote the Ohio sen- ator earlier this year. "I hope they are helpful, and I wish you well in your endeavors." The Newmans receive hear- ing aids from Hadassah chapters nationwide and the National As- sociation for the Homes for the Aged. "The nice part of the project is continuity," Mrs. Newman said. "There will always be a need for hearing aids and that need will always be answered." Hearing aids can be sent to the Greater Detroit Chapter of Hadassah, 5030 Orchard Lake Road, West Bloomfield, MI 48323. III A KIN T• • • O 0 • 1 Only! • RIEW111 3 415,114'11 ish community.
