he fifth-grade class of Tern-
ple Beth El religious school
is embarking on a new
tzedakah program.
They aren't collecting change
for the Jewish National Fund or
holding a food drive for Yad Ezra.
They aren't going to Menorah
House to donate items for the el-
derly residents.
Instead, the students are col-
lecting toiletry items sent to their
homes as samples or taken from
hotels their families visited.
Teacher Shula Levy said the
students took to the idea and
gathered many items from their
homes for donations.
"We got so many things that
we decided to go to the hotels and
ask for donations," she said.
First, they tried the Courtyard
by Marriott in Southfield where
the management donated a box
of conditioners, soaps and sham-
poos. The hotel's response in-
spired the students to solicit
donations from other hotels and
area businesses.
Since then, the students have
been able to round up boxes full
of sample-size tubes of tooth-
paste, toothbrushes, perfumes,
shaving lotions, soaps, mouth-
washes, shampoos and condi-
tioners. The items were
separated into bags and secured
with blue ribbons.
Diane Rubenstein said her son
Rudy went door-to-door in their
West Bloomfield neighborhood
looking for donations.

"He loves it,
just loves it.
He has never
been this ex-
cited in his
life," she said.
The dona-
tions will be
