New York (JTA) — The Lubav-
itch Chabad organization has
changed the date of its annual
fund-raising telethon from just
before Rosh Hashanah to the sev-
enth night of Chanukah, to hon-
or the memory of the late
Lubavitcher rebbe, Menachem
Mendel Schneerson.
"Chanukah was the rebbe's fa-
vorite (holiday)," said Rabbi
Boruch Shlomo Cunin, executive
director of the telethon, which
airs from Los Angeles.
The rebbe was "the one who
took Chanukah public to the
masses in massive menorah
lightings,' said Rabbi Cunin, the
West Coast director of Chabad.
`The whole existence of the rebbe
was dedicated to using a little bit
of light to push away a multitude
of darkness."
The exuberant fund-raiser,
chaired by Hollywood producer
Jerry Weintraub and always at-
tended by well-known Hollywood
figures, has been running for 14
years.
The money raised is used for
Chabad's national drug rehabil-
itation center in Los Angeles and
Chabad's Project Pride, a drug-
prevention program operating
from 30 centers across the coun-
try, Rabbi Cunin said. It also
funds Chabad's programs for
mental health, homelessness, se-
nior citizens, schools and new im-
migrants.
The telethon was carried on 80
cable systems throughout the
country.

Israel Launches
New Satellite

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel will
launch an advanced communi-
cations satellite next November,
officials with Israel Aircraft In-
dustries announced.
The Amos-1 satellite, which is
being built by IAI in cooperation
with Deutsche Aerospace of Ger-
many and the French Alcatel
Aerospace company, will be
launched by a French-made Ari-
ane rocket from French Guinea,
in South America.
Amos-1 will be able 'to' relay
video, voice and data transmis-
sion across an area extending
from Iran to Libya, and from
Ukraine in the north to as far
south as Sudan, Africa.
Officials at Spacecom — a joint
venture of the state-owned IA.I
and three other Israeli firms
which are marketing the satel-
lite's communications services —
say they are currently negotiat-
ing with potential Israeli, Arab
and other international cus-
tomers to lease the satellite's sev-
en transponders.
