cord should be suspended until
PLO leader Yassir Arafat got full
control of the situation in Gaza.
The leader of the right-wing
Tsomet Party, Rafael Eitan,
called the standing IDF orders
that required soldiers to flee the
outpost at Netzarim an "incom-
parable disgrace."
Mr. Arafat, who held meetings
with his aides in Gaza over the
weekend to discuss the situation
in the wake of the bloody con-
frontation, later announced that
he would appoint an official com-
mittee to look into the causes of
the violence.
The Likud party
caucus said that
responsibility lies
with the Israeli
government.
Mr. Arafat invited members of
Hamas to join the investigative
committee, but leaders of the
movement demanded that sev-
eral top officials in the Palestin-
ian Authority first be dismissed.
In a statement, Hamas officials
blamed the violence on the Pales-
tinian police and threatened re-
venge.
The Palestinian Authority in
turn accused some Palestinian el-
ements of attempting to incite a
civil war and promised to take all
measures necessary to ease the
tension.
The severity of the latest clash-
es left the Palestinian communi-
ty in a state of shock.
The Arab newspaper An-Na-
har ran a banner headline that
proclaimed, "No to civil war."

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel and
South Korea have signed a coop-
eration agreement in the fields of
communication and science.
Communications Minister
Shulamit Aloni was in South Ko-
rea for the signing and called the
pact "an important break-
through."
She told Israel Radio that com-
munications firms from South
Korea and Israel will work to-
gether on projects in which the
main financial backing will come
from South Korea.
Ms. Aloni also said there were
broad possibilities for scientific
cooperation, given South Korean
expertise in applied research,
which complements theoretical
research being done in Israel.
