tute scientists have experimen-
tally restored impaired functions
of the hippocampus region of an-
imal brains, which is associat-
ed with memory storage.
Concentrating on "biological
technology," other Institute sci-
entists have identified and char-
acterized gene products that are
critical for normal learning and
memory.
Weizmann brain research has
also given rise to an innovative
technique known as optical
imaging; by recording the slight
variations in brain tissue trans-
parency in response to the elec-
trical activity of nerve cells, it
"lights up" the circuits commu-
nicating visual input and permits
an extremely accurate mapping
of the brain's functional archi-
tecture.
