Survivor Speaks
For ElderMed

The highlight of a special Vet-
erans Day luncheon sponsored
by ElderMed at Botsford Hospi-
tal was an emotion-filled pre-
sentation by one of the liberators
of Buchenwald concentration
camp.
Marcus Bass, a Livonia resi-
dent and member of Adat
Shalom Synagogue in Farming-
ton Hills, recalled the horrific
scenes he witnessed in April
1945. As more than 200 El-
derMed members sat in silence,
the former British army
sergeant-major challenged mod-
ern-day Holocaust deniers.
"I know what I saw," he said.
"It was real. I cannot forget. We
must never forget."
Mr. Bass, a native of
Portsmouth, England, saw action
in much of Europe and was
wounded in Italy. During the El-
derMed program, he wore the
French medal of honor he re-
ceived during his service.
His presentation was one of
several remembrances during
the program titled, "Over There:
A Tribute to World War II," held
