uring the festival of Chanukah we celebrate the victory of the Maccabees, a band of Jewish fighters, over the
superior Syrian army. This victory was a testament to the Maccabees' determination to maintain their Jewish
tradition and national integrity.
On regaining Jerusalem, the Maccabees rededicated the Temple, which had been defiled by the enemy. Though
the flask of consecrated oil contained enough to burn for but one day, the flame lasted for eight, a miracle we have
commemorated during this season for nearly two thousand years.
Determination and rededication: these themes apply directly to the Jewish National Fund's work over the course of nine decades
in Israel.
JNF's achievements in developing the land of Israel were miraculous. A land that was barren and desolate was brought to life,
turned green and made capable of supporting a population of over five million citizens. To achieve this miracle we had to be as de-
termined as the Maccabees in order to realize the hidden potential of a land that was neglected for centuries.
JNF accomplished its miracle in partnership with the Jewish people throughout the world. It was a partnership that enabled us to
plant trees, drain swamps, restore life to the land, ensure future growth and build and secure the modern Jewish state.
JNF's determination — and the continued support of our friends — is essential to meeting Israel's current needs: constructing
dams and reservoirs to contain water, the region's most precious resource; continuing its afforestation program that has made JNF a
recognized leader throughout the world in arid land technologies; developing land for agriculture; sustaining an employment pro-
gram for new immigrants, and building roads, tourist facilities, recreation areas and summer camps for children.
This Chanukah, let us rededicate ourselves to a historic partnership, one that has helped create the greatest miracle of our age —
the rebirth of the land of Israel. Through our partnership with the Jewish people, we will continue to create miracles in the Jewish
homeland.

"Jewish National Fund is the
most successful reforestation pro-
gram in the world," Denise Weck-
er-Seipke said. "And these 600
trees give us a heck of shot in the
arm."
Ms. Wecker-Seipke is executive
director of the Greening of De-
troit, a five-year old organization
planting 3,000 trees a year in the
city. Last month, with the help of
a $3,000 grant from JNF, 600s
trees were planted by Davison El-
ementary School children.
The trees will be cared for by
the students for five years, then
be transplanted throughout the
city.
JNF usually plants trees in Is- .
rael, and the support for Green-
ing of Detroit came out of the
organization's October 6th Tree
of Life Award Dinner honoring
Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer
and his wife, Judge Trudy Dun-
Combe Archer. Judge Archer is
founding vice president of
Greening.
Jack Robinson, Perry Drugs

;NT-

CEO and a JNF Board Member,
was instrumental in bringing the
Archers to JNF and involving the
organization with the Greening
of Detroit efforts, said Ed Rosen-
thal, Regional Director ofJNF. Mr.
Robinson and Mt. Rosenthal met
with the Archers and their staffs
at Top of the Pontch downtown.
'We pleaded with them to get out
and support the Tree of Life
Award and Israel," Mr. Robinson
said. He then asked Mr. Rosen-
thal ifJNF could help Detroit, too.
Permission was received from na-
tional JNF in New York, and the
grant to Greening of Detroit was
announced at the October 6th
dinner.
Ceremonies at Davison Ele-
mentary were attended by the
Archers, Detroit city and school
administrators and Jewish lead-
ers.
"It's really exciting that we in
the Jewish community can give
back to the city of Detroit," Eli A.
Schen- remarked. "So many of us
are plated there." •
