legally.
Commitment ceremonies, a cel-
ebration or blessing of a same-sex
couple's love for one another, are
somewhat new to both the homo-
sexual and Jewish communities.
Growing out of the sexual revo-
lution of three decades ago, the
services have become accepted in
some communities over the past
few years as homosexuals have
made gains in society.
The ceremonies take on as
many different shapes and forms
as the people who participate in
them.
Some feature a blessing and
perhaps the reading of contem-
porary love poetry; others go all
out with wedding gowns, ketubot,
chuppot and high-brow recep-
tions. Some of the ceremonies
take place in temples; others hap-
pen in back yards or parks.
None of the ceremonies are le-
gal — marriage between people
of the same sex is not accepted
in any state in the nation. But
that may change as a challenge
to the constitution of Hawaii will
be decided by that state's
Supreme Court in April.
The ceremonies are part of a
national trend that has swept
through gay and straight congre-
gations and communities from
coast to coast.
In the heart of the United
States' gay community, San
Francisco's Castro district, the

office staff of the predominantly
homosexual Congregation Sha'ar
Zahav has been busier in recent
days. The staff receives several
requests a month from all over
the United States for instructional
packets Rabbi Yoel Kahn has put
together on the topic of sanctify-
ing same-sex unions.
In Boston, Eran Caspi, busi-
ness manager of the Jewish greet-
ing card and ketubot company
Caspi Cards, said his business
last May started mass producing
genderless ketubot for homosex-
ual couples. In the first six
months, the business sold 20 of
these documents, the same
amount they had sold in the 10
years they had done the texts by
hand.
In Grand Rapids, Mich., Rabbi
Albert Lewis said the executive
committee of Temple Emanuel
had no objection last year when
he officiated at his first commit-
ment ceremony, which he calls a
"gay wedding." The service, com-
plete with a chuppah and ke-
tubah, took place in a park.
"In the 25 years I have been in
the rabbinate, it was one of the
most beautiful weddings I have
ever been to,""Rabbi Lewis said.
In metro Detroit, Rabbi
Sherwin Wine of the Birmingham
Temple, which is Humanistic, has
held the ceremonies since Richard
Nixon was president.
