dophiles in Israel, but they prob-
ably number in the hundreds.
Among his patients are married
men from all sectors of society,
secular and religious.
By Israeli law, no one convict-
ed or accused of pedophilia can
be forced to take a drug that sup-
presses this urge. However, the
10 patients in the trial — referred
by courts, the police, and psychi-
atric institutions — agreed to
take the drug voluntarily. Each

injection cost NIS 600 ($200
U.S.), but the Swedish company
is supplying the drug free.
Within a year, at the end of the
study, Decapeptyl-CR could be
recognized by the Israel Health
Ministry for the treatment of pe-
dophilia and paid for by govern-
ment health funds. Professor
Rosier said he does not yet know
whether patients have to receive
the injections for the rest of their
lives or for just a limited time. El

Weizmann Institute research into
inherited leukemia, dwarfism,
muscular dystrophy, Down syn-
drome and other genetic diseases
will be bolstered by the estab-
lishment of the Kekst Family
Foundation for Molecular Ge-
netics. The Foundation was cre-
ated by Mr. Gershon Kekst,
chairman of the Institute's In-
ternational Board of Governors,
Institute President Professor
Haim Harari announced last
week.
Studies to be supported by re-
search grants from the Founda-
tion will focus on elucidating the
molecular basis of various dis-
orders caused by faulty genes.
Among such disorders exten-
sively studied at the Institute is
Duchenne muscular dystrophy
(DMD), a degenerative disease of
the muscle whose victims seldom
survive beyond the age of 20.
Weizmann scientists are investi-
gating the structure and regu-
lating mechanisms of the gene
that is defective in patients with
DMD.
Down syndrome, one of the
most common genetic abnormal-
ities, is also under intense study
at the Weizmann. Institute sci-
entists are analyzing the molec-
ular mechanism responsible for
childhood leukemia, a high sus-
ceptibility to infection and signs
of premature aging that are com-
mon in Down sufferers. This im-
proved knowledge may
eventually aid in the design of the

rapies therapies to relieve certain
Down abnormalities.
The Kekst Foundation will also
support research into inherited
diseases of fructose metabolism,
including hereditary fructose in-
tolerance and fructose-1, 6-
diphosphatase deficiency, as well
as familial neurodegenerative dis-
eases, such as familial
Alzheimer's disease and heredi-
tary amyotrophic lateral sclero-
sis.
In addition, the Foundation
will underwrite research into dis-
orders caused by a combination
of genetic and environmental fac-
tors, such as cancer. Among the
topics of particular interest to In-
stitute researchers in this area
are mechanisms that activate or
suppress the functioning of onco-
genes, which can trigger tumor
growth under certain conditions.
Gershon Kekst is the founder
and president of Kekst and Com-
pany Incorporated. Established
in 1970 in New York City, Kekst
and Company is a corporate and
financial communications firm
whose clients include both Unit-
ed States and multi-national com-
panies in a number of different
industries.
Mr. Kekst serves as chairman
of the board of the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary. He serves on
the board of trustees of Brandeis
University in Waltham, Mass.,
and Montefiore Medical Center
in New York City. ❑
