Maccabi Athletes
Will Head West

STEVE STEIN STAFF WRITER

H

ouston and Los Angeles
will be the destinations
next summer for the De-
troit athletes taking part
in regional Jewish Community
Centers Maccabi Youth Games.
Detroit delegation head Dr.
Alan Horowitz said approxi-
mately half of the 170 to 200 local
athletes ages 13-18 will be sent
to each city.
"Where an athlete goes will de-
pend upon which sport he or she
is playing," Dr. Horowitz said.
"We'll be looking to see which site
provides the best competition for
each sport"
Dr. Horowitz said all five re-
gional sites were considered by
Detroit Maccabi officials, but
Houston and Los Angeles were
chosen over Columbus (Ohio),
Orlando (Fla.) and Long Island
because they appeared to be
better organized, with more
community involvement.
"In no way do I want to be crit-
ical of the other sites," Dr.
Horowitz said. "It's just that we
preferred the ones we chose."
This will be the first time both
Houston and Los Angeles will
host a Maccabi competition.

For the Detroit Maccabi ath-
letes, the regionals will mark
their first trip west of St. Louis
and they'll be flying to a Maccabi
event for the first time. They nor-
mally travel by bus.
"We've made reservations to
fly round-trip on Continental to
Houston and on United to Los
Angeles," Dr. Horowitz said.

Angeles on Friday, Aug. 11, 1995,
so they can spend Shabbat with
their host families.
Opening ceremonies at both
sites will be held Sunday, Aug.
13. The local athletes will be
returning home the following
Thursday or Friday.
This past summer, nearly 200
Detroit athletes competed in the
North American Maccabi Youth
Games in Cleveland. Regionals
and North American games are
held in alternating years. ❑
