lengths to acquire cactus. For in-
stance, in South America it was
unlawful to bring the entire plant
out of the country. "So people
brought pieces of cactus instead,"
explains Mr. Elias.
When Mr Elias wanted to sup-
plement his garden with cactus
that was already grown, he
turned to veteran Israeli collec-
tors. Some of them had plants
that were already 40 years old.
Their plants came from varied
places — South America, Europe,
and in some cases, Israel. Mr.
Elias points out one group of
F plants bought from a collector in
nearby Netanya who grew them
in his garden.
One of the prize collections is
kept indoors. Just beyond the out-
door garden is a greenhouse. In-
side is a roomful of exotic-looking
cacti.
These all belonged to cactus
collector Stephanie Landsberg-
Lo er. A native of Germany who im-
migrated to Israel, she had a
famous cactus collection acquired
and. tended for more than 40
years.
Shortly before she died, she
thought about ways to bequeath
her collection. After she did con-
siderable research to find the
right person to whom to entrust
her collection, she chose Mr. Elias
because of his expertise and ded-
ication to cactus.
"She came to me and said, 'I
want to donate to you all of my
collection for a public park,' " he
relates.
Gradually, he started to bring
her treasured cacti to the garden
and arranged for a special green-
house to be built, as well as a ded-
ication plaque.
Inside the greenhouse, all the
plants — many of them highly
specialized — are in pots and
carefully labeled. "Some of these
are 30 years old," says Mr. Elias,
pointing to plants that still look
very small and delicate.
Outside again, we stop to ad-
mire the special plot reserved for
the sabra cactus. The rows of
these sturdy plants are a dis-
tinctive sight, especially because
this is the country where the
sabra is so much admired.
Then we got into the jeep and
headed for another unusual gar-
den. On the way, we passed Za-
pari Park, the park for tropical
birds — another prime attraction
and one I had visited on an ear-
lier trip. We also saw the rock
;--) garden, the amphitheater where
outdoor concerts are held. And
the recreation areas of this mul-
ti-purpose park.
Soon we arrived at an area
that looks like a lush tropical for-
est. The pathway here is dense
with thick, tall trees.
We got out of the jeep to walk
through this tropical paradise,
where birds are chirping and the
air is fragrant and cool.
