I n the garden are rows and rows of cactus plants. Some are tall and spiky; others are low and squat. There are cone shapes and cylinders and stalks; cacti that look like giant cucum- bers and others that are small and rounded. It's a striking sight, this gar- den entirely of cactus plants. It's especially appropriate that it's located in Israel; for this is the place where the sabra cactus, tough on the outside, tender on the inside, has become the name — and the symbol — for the na- tive Israelis themselves. This garden in Tel Aviv has a sizeable collection of sabras. But there are many other types of cac- tus plants in the Cactus Garden in Hayarkon Park, the expansive park located not far from the cen- ter of Tel Aviv. Begun in 1987, the Cactus Garden now has one of the largest collections anywhere, with over 1200 different types of cac- tus plants, many of them rare and unusual types that are diffi- cult to acquire and grow. Many of them were acquired from Israeli cactus collectors. "There are cactus all over the world, in arid and in moist zones, and the early immigrants brought cactus with them," says Yacov Elias, head of special gar- dens in Hayarkon Park. It was he who started the cactus garden and supervises it carefully. As we look at the amazingly varied display of plants, Mr. Elias explains some of the challenges of starting and maintaining the garden: "When we decided to make a cactus garden, we planted 2000 plants right away," he relates. But cactus grows very, very slow- ly, so he also had to seek out col- lectors who already had acquired cacti from varied parts of the world. Those collectors were both young and old. "The first immi- grants brought cactus with them, and some started collecting in the 1930s," says Mr. Elias. Collectors often got to great
