F

ostering better relations be-
tween groups who do not
typically have a strong al-
liance is worked at through
dialogue and bridge-building
coalitions.
Some attempts work. Others
are not as successful.
Ruth Driker Kroll can boast
success. Her organization, the
Detroit Women's Forum, a pro-
ject of the American Jewish Com-
mittee, is celebrating 20 years of
success with a Dec. 7 dinner at
the St. Regis Hotel in Detroit.
Founded in 1974 by a small
group of women wondering what
would happen to their newly won
affirmative rights in the wake of
a recession, the forum continues
to meet regularly and discuss top-
ics relevant to women.
`There is no place in the city of
Detroit where such a cross-sec-
tion of women can be found as at
the Detroit Women's Forum
monthly meetings," said Mildred
Jeffrey, a founding member. Cur-
rent membership stands at 200
women and participants include
activists like Detroit City Coun-
cil President Maryann Mahaffey,
state Rep. Maxine Berman, and
Joann Watson, the executive di-
rector of the NAACP.
"The forum works because the
issues we discuss are important
to all women," said Ms. Kroll,
who founded the organization.
"Colonand church or synagogue
affiliation do not matter. We are
fighting the same prejudices in
the board rooms and academic
settings. These are unifying
forces that cross class, race and

color. That is what keeps us go-
ing. The fostering of relationships
happens in the process."
Members meet monthly to dis-
cuss social, political and economic
topics. Events like yearly re-
treats, a feminist seder and
Kwanzaa and Chinese new year
celebrations are also conducted.
"It's an opportunity to get to-
gether with a diverse group of
women to look at serious issues
that impact us," said Arlene Vic-
tor, a forum board member and
president of Women's Action for
New Directions.
Ms. Victor said the forum pro-
vides her with a good opportuni-
ty to make contacts outside of the
Jewish community.

"Color and church
or synagogue
affiliation do not
matter."

—Ruth Driker Kroll

For an organization that be-
gan at the height of the women's
movement, many of the same is-
sues, like domestic violence and
women's rights, are still dis-
cussed.
"In the beginning, we talked a
lot about how women connect,"
Ms. Kroll said. "We were all sort
of infatuated with sisterhood and
there was a lot of discussion
about how to wear three hats as
a housewife, a mother and a
worker. This was a time where

no one used the F word — femi-
nism. People are finally becom-
ing more comfortable with it."
The forum started with a lun-
cheon to discuss a book about
working-class women who felt
alienated from the women's
movement. It was held to make
allies with non-Jewish groups
and because of its success, the fo-
rum evolved into regular meet-
ings.
While the Detroit Women's Fo-
rum operates separate from the
AJCommittee, Ms. Kroll feels
it is important to remain under
the auspices of a Jewish organi-
zation. She maintains that value
lies in encouraging Jews to par-
ticipate in the city. It also re-
minds Jews and non-Jews that
acting ethically is an intrinsic
Jewish value.

Clarification

An article in the Nov. 11 issue
of The Jewish News inadver-
tently contained misinforma-
tion about Cantor Shabtai
Ackerman.
The story should have said
that Shabtai Ackerman was
chief cantor in the Great Syn-
agogue of Tel Aviv before com-
ing in 1955 to Beth Abraham.
Additionally, Cantor Acker-
man was not ill when Cantor
Israel Fuchs was hired.
