Juneau's population is highly
mobile, with many departures
and arrivals, and Mrs. Bernstein
estimates that over the past 15
years there has been a complete
turnover among Jewish resi-
dents.
Yet with all the obstacles,
things get done. For the High
Holy Days, the community
brings in a rabbi from the Low-
er 48. Over the years, other com-
munal observances have been
added, from a Passover seder
and Chanukah to Purim and,
most recently, Yom Hashoah
(Holocaust Memorial Day). A
summer camp for the kids is now
a going concern.
Occasionally, services are aug-
mented by Israelis working in
fish canneries and by Jews off
the large cruise ships that an-
chor at the local port.
Juneau's resident Jews have
little contact with national Jew-
ish organizations. "Occasional-
ly, an ADL person comes up from
Seattle," says Mrs. Bernstein,
who as Mary-Claire Tarlow,
PhD, directs the elementary ed-
ucation programs at the Uni-
versity of Alaska Southeast.
- "AIPAC tried to get a few
things going, and we did some
lobbying for Israel with our leg-
islators," she adds. 'The nearest
Israeli consulate is in San Fran-
cisco. I tried to become active in
Hadassah and was told to join
the chapter in Anchorage."
(Juneau is surrounded by glaci-
ers and can only be reached by
plane or ship. It is 569 air miles
from Anchorage.)
The community has adopted
a Russian-Jewish family and put
on a benefit for the family and
for Operation Exodus.
Stripped to essentials, the
Jewish heritage has always been
passed on from parents to chil-
dren. In the Bernstein family,
which includes 8-year-old Rachel
and 5-year-old David, "you can't
buy a Jewish education for your
kids here," says the father, Pete
Bernstein. "You've got to order
the books, read them yourself"
In a parting sentence, Pete
Bernstein expresses a sentiment
that might well stand as the mot-
to for Alaskans in general, and
for the Frozen Chosen in partic-
ular: "If you want something
done," he says, "you have to
make it happen yourself." 0
