derstand him or her. Joseph
wanted to talk peace with his
brothers — V'shoel Bishlomam
— and they did not answer him
— V'Io hayu moshivim oto.
This disease of the absence of
brotherliness applies not only to
our behavior with individuals but
with the way entire peoples are
treated. As much as Israel seeks
peace with her neighbors, there
are still some entitles which
refuse to answer Israel's call for
mutual recognition and for peace
negotiations. Unfortunately oth-
er examples abound.
This Shabbat, so close in time
to the celebration of Thanksgiv-
ing and to the coming joy of
Chanukah, can remind us to give
thanks to God for making us His
partner in trying to bring greater
brotherliness to the world and for
dedicating us to make God's will
more manifest. We need to be
trail-blazers in what Judaism re-
quires of us — "seek the peace
and the welfare of my fellow man,
my brother." LI
