avid Cantor, the author of
a controversial 162-page
Anti-Defamation League
report on tolerance and
pluralism in America, expected
opposition from those he was
most critical of — the religious
right. It was the intensity of the
criticism from within the Jewish
community that took him by sur-
prise.
'There is a terminal insecuri-
ty of some members of the Jew-
ish community," he said. "These
are the people who kept saying,
`Why are you bothering (with the
report)?"
Mr. Cantor was in town last
week, meeting with ADL mem-
bers and contributors and dis-
cussing The Religious Right: The

D

Assault on Tolerance & Plural-
ism in America.
Mr. Cantor, the senior re-
search analyst for the ADL, said
the report was written to bring
to light "the activities of a high-
ly intolerant exclusionary move-
ment that is amassing social and
political power and whose agen-
da is not in the best interest of
our democracy and Constitu-
tion."
The report prompted an im-
mediate response from organi-
zations like the Christian
Coalition and the Free Congress
Foundation. But it also inspired
almost 80 Jews from around the
country to place a signed adver-
tisement in the New York Times
questioning "evidence of a con-
servative Christian threat to
Jewish security." Much of the
criticism focused on the report's
accuracy. Mr. Cantor said it was
entirely factual.
"Was I knowingly misquoting
people or misrepresenting
them?" he asked. "The ans-
wer was always no. The quotes
I used were from their materials.
I worked on the project for
over a year to ensure the groups
were fairly represented. We a
pologized for the two mistakes
in the book and corrected
them." ,
Another major criticism of the
report was its lack of references.
Mr. Cantor said he wanted to in-
clude footnotes but ran out of
time. The report had to be fin-
ished before an ADL national
meeting.
Some Jewish critics ques-
tioned the denouncement of Pat
Robertson, a strong supporter of
Israel.
While acknowledging his sup-
port of Israel, the report indicates
that: "Until recent years, Robert-
son and leading Jewish groups,

including the ADL, enjoyed
friendly relations.
"Nonetheless, Robertson ap-
pears to view Jews as akin to
spiritual pawns."
"We don't want to undermine
his support of Israel," Mr.
Cantor said. "But, so what. That
does not give him carte blanche
on everything else. Support of Is-
rael is embedded in their theol-
ogy."
While the firestorm sur-
rounding the report has since

"There is a terminal
insecurity of some
members of the
Jewish community."

— David Cantor

David Cantor: ADL analyst.

subsided, Mr. Cantor said he
would not be surprised to see an-
other uproar when the book is
published by Doubleday next
year.
The published version will be
different.
"Some of the sections were
thin," Mr. Cantor said. "Those
will be filled in. Plus, we're
adding a chapter on counterac-
tion — what people can do."
The additional chapter will
recommend working with
and educating the media and
lawmakers and focusing
`energy on building interfaith
coalitions.
ADL's next report will be a
historical survey of Jewish
myths. It is due out in June. ❑
