Prayer Service
Held In Oak Park

ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM

ASSOCIATE EDITOR

C

ongregation Dovid Ben
Nuchim in Oak Park was
the site of a special prayer
service convened last week
because of an unusual number of
deaths, especially among young
Jews, in Detroit and throughout
the country.
The services were initiated by
the national association of bikur
cholim (groups who visit ailing
Jews) after consultation with
leading rabbis, according to Rab-
bi Dov Loketch of Congregation
Agudath Israel-Mogain Avra-
ham.

Psalms are
traditionally recited
in times of distress.

"The health concerns were
such that the society felt that
cities across the United States
should make a special service,"
he said.
About 80 men and boys and 20
women attended last week's ser-
vice, which was led by Rabbi
Solomon Gruskin of B'nai Zion.
The service consisted of respon-
sive readings from Tehillim, the
Book of Psalms.
Rabbi Loketch said his con-
gregation is continuing to hold
weekly readings of Tehillim, with
each member participating so
that the entire book will be read.
Traditionally, Tehillim are
read for ailing Jews. ❑
