Ruth Klein, 96, of Birmingham,
died Nov. 17. Mrs. Klein was a
member of the board of trustees
of Temple Beth El, vice presi-
dent for many years of the
Fresh Air Society, board mem-
ber of American Jewish Com-
mittee, board member and
recording secretary of Women's
American ORT and went on its
first caravan to Israel. Also, she
was a member of the first board
of directors of Women's Com-
mittee of the Jewish Welfare
Federation, first Jewish co-
chairman of the Round Table of
Catholics, Jews and Protes-
tants, past president of the De-
troit Planned Parenthood
League from 1955-1957 and
served on the board of council
of Jewish Women as a record-
ing secretary and vice president.
She was president from
1937-1939 at which time she
started a very successful group
in lip reading and related ser-
vices to the Jewish adult deaf
and hard of hearing, the first of
its kind in the Jewish Commu-
nity. Mrs. Klein was past pres-
ident of Mid-East Regional Con-
ference of National Council of
Jewish Women from 1939-
1941, president of sisterhood of
Temple Beth El 1946-1948,
president of League of Jewish
Women's Organization 1939-
1941, member of board of
Women's Guild of Sinai Hospi-
tal and she worked since in its
inception with Council's Custer
School Project, teaching Eng-
lish to Russians. She went as a
delegate to Israel to attend the
dedication of the Union of
American Hebrew Congrega-
tions Building for biblical stud-
ies in Jerusalem. Mrs. Klein
was a member of the Franklin
Hills Country Club and the
Great Lakes Club. She was the
JACK BEN-JOSEPH, 47, for-
merly of Detroit, of Honolulu,
Hawaii, died Nov 9. He is sur-
vived by two children in Hawaii;
parents, Michael and Mina of
Oak Park; brother, Ellis of South-
field. Services at Hebrew Memo-
rial Park through Hebrew Memo-
rial Chapel.
ISADORE ARNOLD BERG-
ER, 89, of Detroit, died Nov. 16.
Mr. Berger was an attorney and
was nicknamed "Hobo Berger"
because he practiced law for six
months of the year and was a
photographer for the other six
months. He was the founding fa-
ther of Revco Drug Stores, top
amateur photographer, past pres-
ident of the Detroit Salon Soci-
ety, past president of the Detroit
Camera Club, fellow and life
member of Photographic Society
of America, as well as a member
of the Royal Photographic Soci-
ety of Great Britain. He was with
Castro on the day of the Bay of
Pigs, worked with Albert
Schweitzer in Africa with the lep-
rosy colony, was one of the first
people to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro,
met with the Sultan of Zanzibar
She was an
active, integral
part of the Jewish
Community
beloved wife of the late Maurice.
She is survived by her son and
daughter-in-law, Thomas and
Judith of Silver Spring, Md.;
daughter, Susan Shapiro of
Birmingham; grandchildren,
Alan Shaprio and Joan Agua-
do, Elizabeth Shaprio, Anne
Shapiro, Richard and Debbie
Klein, Edward and Melissa
Klein; great-grandchildren, El-

person to bring a Chinese Junk
to America which he sailed on the
Great Lakes. Mr. Berger donat-
ed numerous historical artifacts
to the Detroit Historical Muse-
um, worked with Weggie and
Ansel Adams in his own photo-
graphic dark room and rode the
rapids of Colorado. He was the
beloved husband of the late Irene
Berger. He is survived by his
daughters.and son-in-law, Gloria
Hall of Detroit, Joan and Dr. Al-
bert Clubok of Gainsville, Fla.;
grandchildren, Kevin, Marla and
Brandon Hill, Douglas Clubok
and Toby Kazarian. Interment at
Clover Hill Park Cemetery.
