ed 60 percent involved in the le-
gal profession, mainly as attor-
neys and judges.
However, Mr. Rosenfeld
warns potential immigrants from
the Lower 48 not to resettle with-
out an assured job and some fi-
nancial resources. "Rents are
high here, we don't have a [Jew-
ish] federation, and we're not set
up to assist newcomers," he says.
Recently, Mr. Rosenfeld lost
his claim to being the only per-
manent rabbi in Alaska when
Rabbi Yosef Greenburg estab-
lished Shomrei Ohr, a Lubavitch
synagogue with a membership
of some 20 Anchorage families.
"We have cordial relations and
some joint programs with Shom-
rei Ohr," says Mr. Rosenfeld, "but
we're not as close as we used to
be."
Alaska's third, though rabbi-
less, synagogue is Ohr Hazafon
(Light of the North) in Fair-
banks, the state's second largest
city.
Still, Mr. Rosenfeld emulates
the circuit-riding preachers of the
Old West, with annual visits to
Juneau, Fairbanks and smaller
communities. His outreach ex-
tends even further to non-Jews
undergoing conversion in remote
hamlets, not an easy task in a
state the size of England, France,
Spain and Italy combined.

Beth Sholom proves
that it takes only a
small critical mass
of Jews to trigger a
chain-reaction of
Jewish activities.

He has.put together a study
program through correspondence
courses, extensive phone con-
versations and is working on an
online Judaica computer pro-
gram. The actual conversion cer-
emonies are performed at Beth
Sholom.
Asked what he misses most,
Mr. Rosenfeld cites his distance
from rabbinical colleagues. "I can
order books and access some ma-
terial by computer," he says, `but
to sit down and study with an-
other rabbi, that is almost im-
possible."
Although Jews constitute only
0.5 percent of Alaska's 570,000
residents, driving and hiking
through the state one unexpect-
edly encounters footloose Jews,
for whom even the small cities
are too confining.
Hiking along Savage Creek
Canyon in the magnificent De-
nali National Park, which is larg-
er than Massachusetts, our
ranger guide introduced himself
as Steven Cohen.
His folks live in Missoula,
Mont., population 43,000, where
