"My family learned about the Heatherwood life-style... and now I'm living it!" B'Tselem Charges Abuse By IDF Jerusalem (JTA) — The Israeli human rights organization WI'se- lem this week accused inter- rogators with the Israel Defense Force and the General Security Service of routinely using torture against Palestinian detainees. The group called on the goy- > ernment to ban such mistreat- ment, and warned that the abuse could breed more violence. B'Tselem issued a report that cited the testimonies of nine Palestinian detainees and the proceedings of four court hear- ings. B'Tselem, which monitors hu- man rights abuses in the territo- ries, said the methods of torture employed by Israeli security forces included beatings, verbal abuse and prolonged deprivation of sleep and food. The authors of the report re- jected the argument that the re- cent wave of Islamic fundamentalist terror against Is- raelis justifies the use of torture. "Innocent people arrested for > long weeks and tortured harshly go out with a lot of bitterness and anger," said Yuval Ginbar, one of the report's authors. "When you torture people, the benefit is not unequivocal." Responding to the B'Tselem charges, an IDF spokesman is- sued a statement pointing out that violence or threats of violence against detainees in army pris- ons is strictly forbidden. The spokesman added that regular checks are made to insure that standing orders regarding interrogation methods are fol- lowed. He said that any com- plaints made to the army are thoroughly investigated, with se- vere punishments meted out to anyone found guilty of violating the orders. Germany Bans Neo-Nazi Group Berlin (JTA) — The German gov- ernment has banned a paramil- itary neo-Nazi organization called the Viking Youth. Last week's ban on the group was accompanied by police raids throughout Germany to search the homes of the group's 400 members. Viking Youth, which was founded in 1952, advocates the elimination of the current Ger- man government, by violence if necessary, and replacing it with a Nazi state. Announcing the ban on Nov. 10, Interior Minister Manfred Kanther said the group has been giving paramilitary training to young Germans and indoctri- nating them with Nazi ideology. $250 His or hers.
