ELI TIOMKIN scored a goal
and goalie Amir Tal was perfect
in the nets as the eighth-ranked
Oakland University soccer team
blanked third-ranked Wisconsin-
Parkside 2-0 on Nov. 19 in
Kenosha, Wis. and advanced to
the NCAA Division II national
semifinals.
Tiomkin, a senior forward
from Raanana, Israel, tallied at
the 72:01 mark to give the Pio-
neers a 2-0 lead. It was Tiomkin's
12th goal of the season and 56th
of his career. He has 153 career
points, one short of the school
record.
Tal made four saves and post-
ed his ninth shutout of the year.
He is a freshman from Tel Aviv,
Israel.
The victory gave Oakland (17-
1-2) a berth in the Dec. 2-4 semi-
finals and finals, which probably
will be played in Tampa, Fla. The
Pioneers will meet fifth-ranked
Seattle Pacific and sixth-ranked
Tampa will face top-ranked
Southern Connecticut in the
semifinals.
This is the sixth time that
Oakland has made it to the semi-

STEVE STEIN

finals. The Pioneers have played
for the championship just once,
losing 4-1 to Seattle Pacific in the
1986 title game.
Oakland is undefeated in 13
consecutive matches, tying a
school record. Its last loss was a
3-0 setback to Parkside at home
on Sept. 24.

SCOTT LESHMAN, a sopho-
more on the Western Michigan
University soccer team, scored
his first two collegiate goals this
season.
The Bloomfield Hills Andover
High School grad tallied Sept. 20
in a 4-0 victory over Valparaiso
and Nov. 1 in a 9-1 win over
Spring Arbor.
Western Michigan finished 9-
10-1.

AMY FINKEL, Stephanie Co-
hen and Cheri Farber helped the
North Farmington High School
200 medley relay team place 11th
in the Class A state girls swim-
ming meet. The squad was timed
in 1:54.97. The state meet was
held Nov. 19 at Michigan State
University.

Fox said Sternberg "improved
