— upon which innumerable de-
signs can be laid.
Pretty patterns that pick up on
your neutral hue can range from
holiday finery to the latest trendy
images — whether sunflowers,
cows or celestial suns and stars.
Anything goes, but it's key to re-
member to buy only patterns that
are somehow harmonious with
your home and tableware already
on hand.
Beyond the base of plates, the
well-stocked tableware cabinet
also will house a variety of glass,
crystal, silver, stainless, and side
and specialty dishes that can be
mixed and matched to coordinate
with your patterns of choice. The
more comprehensive the collec-
tion, the greater the diversity of
your tables — from classic set-
tings to more contemporary eclec-
tic looks.
Don't be afraid to explore your
cupboards — and local garage
sales — for interesting acces-
sories. The tables with most vi-
sual appeal often are those
dressed in a hodgepodge of the
host's valued collectibles —
whether Depression-era glass,
pewter, porcelain figurines and

ENGAGING ETIQUE rIE
Aside from setting the table as
a visu al treat, it's essential to bal-
ance a love of beauty with prac-
ticality of purpose. Hence, here's
an overview of generally accept-
ed rules of tabletop etiquette:
Don't overcrowd the table with
people or dishes. Set enough salt
and pepper shakers and condi-
ments so that guests will not
have to pass often.
Use place-setting tags with
names written on both sides of
the tags so all guests can see all
names.
Centerpieces should be low so
that guests can see each other;
flowers should not be fragrant.
Candles generally are reserved
for after dusk.
Utensils should be positioned
so that they are used from the
outside in. To the plate's right:
knife followed by soup spoon, if
needed. To the plate's left: forks,
the first to be used farthest left.
The napkin is left of the forks,
with nothing on it so it is easy to
pick up. The bread-and-butter
plate is above the forks; glasses
and goblets above the knife, in
descending order of height.
Dessert flatware may be set
\ horizontally above the dinner
) plate. Coffee cups, saucers and
spoons should be set on the table
only after the dinner dishes are
cleared.
