Dutch Hold
Commemoration

Amsterdam (JTA) — A com-
memoration was held for the 21
Israelis and the single Dutch vic-
tim who died in the Oct. 19 sui-
cide bombing of a bus in the heart
of Tel Aviv.
Among those attending the
ceremony at the Ashkenazic syn-
agogue in The Hague were Dutch
Interior Minister Hans Dijkstal,
Israeli Ambassador Michael
Bavli and the parents of 25-year-
old Dutch physiotherapist Rinier
Yurest, who died in the blast.
The commemoration was or-
ganized jointly by the Ashkenaz-
ic and Liberal rabbis of The
Hague and Rotterdam.
Visibly moved during his
speech at the ceremonies, Mr.
Bavli said the victims of the bus
bombing "fell not in the defense
of Israel, but because there is a
monster that is blinded by a mor-
bid hatred of the Jewish people."
The Islamic fundamentalist .
Hamas movement, which is mil-
itantly opposed to the ongoing Is-
raeli-Palestinian peace initiative,
claimed responsibility for the bus
attack.
Addressing the bereaved par-
ents of Mr. Yurest, who was not
Jewish, Mr. Bavli said, "Your son
has been murdered only because
he wanted to be with us."
Other speakers at the ceremo-
ny included Rabbi Pinchas Meijk-
ers of The Hague and Rabbi
Olody Van de Kamp of Rotter-
dam.
All the speakers stressed their
belief that despite the devastat-
ing attack and other recent on-
slaughts by Hamas, the peace
process between Israel and the
Palestinians should continue.

Congregation
Reaches 100

Johannesburg (JTA) — The Jew-
ish community of Bulawayo, Zim-
babwe, recently marked its 100th
anniversary.
The chief rabbi of South Africa,
Cyril Harris, speaking at both a
thanksgiving service in the Bul-
awayo synagogue and at the
100th anniversary banquet, paid
tribute to the 500-member Jew-
ish community for "succeeding in
preserving vibrant Jewish life."
Ms. Harris, who was accom-
panied by a delegation from the
Johannesburg-based Union of
Orthodox Synagogues, said that
anniversaries were a time for
rededication to traditional Jew-
ish values, which should be pre-
served for the future.
"It has been 100 years of Ju-
daism, of Zionism, of philan-
thropy and of friendship with
each other — and of happy coop-
eration with the town, he said.
