School place third in the Western
Lakes Activities Association girls
swimming meet Nov. 5.
Finkel made the grade in the
50 and 100 freestyle. She was sec-
ond in the 50 in 25.66 and fifth in
the 100 in 55.54.
North Farmington's 200 med-
ley relay team placed second in
1:54.76 and the 200 freestyle re-
lay group was second in 1:42.70.
Joining Finkel on those state
meet-qualifying squads were
Stephanie Cohen, Becky Ash-
burn and Cheri Farber.
The state meet is being held
this weekend at Michigan State
University in East Lansing.

Israeli connection on the Oakland
University soccer team, helped
the Pioneers keep their NCAA
Division II title hopes alive last
Sunday.
Tiomkin scored one goal, Anko-
ri played well defensively and Tal
was solid in the net as Oakland
edged visiting East Stroudsburg
(Pa.) 2-1 in sudden-death over-
time in a first-round central re-
gion game.
The eighth-ranked Pioneers
(15-1-2) will play at third-ranked
Wisconsin-Parkside (14-1-2) at 2
p.m. EST Saturday in the central
region title game with the win-
ner advancing to the national
semifinals.
Parkside beat Oakland 3-0 at
Oakland on Sept. 24, handing the
Pioneers their lone loss of the sea-
son.
Tiomkin, a senior forward from
Raanana, broke a scoreless tie
with East Stroudsburg. (18-4) just
1:37 into the second half He boot-
ed home a rebound into an emp-
ty net and his momentum sent
him into the twine.
'The ball was spinning on the
line," Tiomkin said. "I said thank
you and put it in."
It was the 11th goal of the sea-
son for Tiomkin, Oakland's lead-
ing scorer.

Tal, who came into the game
with a 0.53 goals-against average
and eight shutouts, made just
two saves but he was ready when
needed. The freshman goalie
from Tel Aviv used his 6-foot-3
height to grab a couple of dan-
gerous crosses.
Tiomkin thinks Oakland may
have an advantage in the re-
match with Parkside.
`They may think they're going
to have an easy game because we
lost 3-0 to them instead of, say,
1-0," he said.
This is the ninth consecutive
year and the 12th time in 13 sea-
sons that Oakland has played in
the Division II tournament.
The Pioneers have reached the
national semifinals on five occa-
sions and the championship
game once, but are still looking
for their first national crown.
