Berkley High School girls cross-country co-captains Amy Siegel and Jennifer Rose led their team back to the state meet this fall. 120 my Siegel and Jennifer Rose enjoyed many per- sonal and team success- es during their combined seven years on the Berkley High School cross-country girls squad. But there are other reasons why the se- niors will always re- member running for the Bears. "This was the best program I could have gotten involved in," Siegel said. 'e were a family — the girls and the boys on the boys team. Everyone was so supportive of each other. "I feel rve grown a lot through cross-country. I've also learned time management and tenacity, which has helped me with my studies." Rose echoed Siegel's thoughts: "From cross-country, rve learned that with hard work, dedication and commitment, you can ac- complish anything," she said. "I've also learned to be a team player. It's really sad to know rve run my last cross-country race for Berkley." Rose played basketball when she was a freshman at Berkley. After going to cross-country camp with the school's runners the fol- lowing summer and getting her first taste of the camaraderie, she switched fall sports for good. Cheri Amos-Helmicki, who has STEVE STEIN STAFF WRITER PHOTOS BY BILL GEMMELL Foot Feat Diana Kozloff, Amy Siegel, Jennifer Rose and Anna Yemets. coached the Berkley girls and boys cross-country teams for 10 years, says Siegel and Rose are "incredible young ladies. They're goal-oriented and very caring. They'll be successes in whatev- er they pursue." Siegel, 17, an Oak Park resi- dent, is a 3.8 grade-point average student. Next fall, she'll head to Michigan State Uni- versity, where she will be enrolled in James Madison Col- lege. She hopes to pursue a career in environmental law. Rose, 17, who lives in Huntington Woods, is a 3.6 stu- dent. She'll be going to the University of Michigan next year to study political sci- ence. She has career thoughts about poli- tics or law. The two girls served as co-captains of the girls cross- country team this fall. They were voted captains by their teammates. Siegel ran for the Front, Matthew Wagner, Scott Adelman and Peter Rose. Back, Andrew Bears for four years Sigman, David Levitt, Gabe Rubin, Sam Polk and Brent Siegel. and competed in the Class A state meet all four seasons. Her best time in the state meet was the 20:14 she ran this year at Saskatoon Golf Club in Grand Rapids. She earned all-league honors three times. As a sophomore, Siegel helped Berkley tie Troy for the Southeastern Michigan As- sociation championship. Siegel's brother, Adam Bolan, is a former Berkley boys cross- country star who made headlines by running in a regional race and nearly qualifying for the state meet just two weeks after an appendectomy. This past spring, Bolan graduated from the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Rose was a three-year member of the girls cross-country squad and a three-time state meet com- petitor. Her best state meet time was 21:04 at Saskatoon in 1993. She was an All-SMA runner as a sophomore. Berkley has qualified for the girls team race in the state meet for three consecutive years. The Bears finished 12th in 1992 and 14th in 1993. With a mostly in- experienced group this fall, they placed 25th. The squad won several invita- tionals during the years that Siegel and Rose were on the ros- ter and it earned Academic All- State honors in 1992 and 1993. It's almost certain the Bears will make it three in a row for that ac- complishment this fall. Even though Siegel and Rose have finished running cross-coun- try for Berkley (they'll return for their fourth season on the girls track team this spring), their fam- ily names will be in the spotlight for a few more years. That's because they both have a brother on Berkley's boys cross- country squad. Brent Siegel is a freshman and Peter Rose is a sophomore. Amos-Helmicki says her boys team has a bright future, and two of the probable leaders are sopho- more Sam Polk and freshman Dave Levitt. Each made tremen- dous improvement this season, the coach said. "Two years from now, when our sophomores are seniors, this boys team is going to be top- flight," Amos-Helmicki said. Other runners to watch on the Berkley girls and boys squads the next few seasons are Diana Ko- zloff, Anna Yemets, Scott Adel- man, Andrew Sigman, Gabe Rubin and Matthew Wagner.
