s a bellboy at the Tel Aviv
Hilton hotel, Eres Vardon
receives tips in many for-
eign currencies given to
him by guests from all over the
world. But the tip he received one
recent day was a real surprise —
even a shock.
"Look at this! he exclaimed,
dashing into the office of Motti
Verses to show him a tip given in
dinars, the currency of Jordan.
Mr. Vardon had never before
seen or handled bills bearing
King Hussein's image, just as
he'd never met any guests from
Jordan at the hotel. "This is
history!" he said excitedly.
Mr. Verses, who is spokesman
for Hilton International in Israel,
soon learned that the tip had
been given by Faisal Tabbah, one
of three businessmen from Jor-
dan who had checked into the Tel
Aviv Hilton for a five-day visit.
They were being hosted by
Delta textile factory and were in
Israel to visit a number of fac-
tories to see which Israeli
products would be suitable for
Jordan.
"It's the first time in the his-
tory of this hotel — or of any hotel
in Tel Avv — that we've had
guests from Jordan," said Mr.
Verses. "Until now, the contacts
between Israel and Jordan have
all been on a political level.
"But this is the first time that
businessmen from Jordan are
coming to Tel Aviv, the heart of
Israel, to see the possibilities for
business."
Mr. Verses met with the Jor-
danian guests for several break-
fast meetings and also arranged
a photo session, which they
readily agreed to. Although
foreign guests on business in Tel
Aviv don't usually make the
news, in this case, the Jor-

danians' visit was covered by
three Israeli dailies.
Mr. Tabbah and his colleagues
maintained a busy schedule dur-
ing their five days, visiting one
factory after another.
"We are thoroughly checking
out various Israeli products with
one goal — doing business," he
told Mr. Verses. "Let the politi-
cians do their part and we will
do our share in the peace
process."
Besides visiting factories, the
Jordanian businessmen were
also getting new business ideas
from their visit to a five-star hotel
in Tel Aviv.
For example, they were daz-
zled by the famous Israeli break-
fasts: a feast of fruits, cheeses,
bread, cereal, yogurt, cold fish

and more. "They were so im-
pressed with the Israeli break-
fasts compared to what is served
in Jordanian hotels," said Mr.
Verses. "But they also realized
that the food products we use are
mainly the same ones they have
in Jordan. So they saw new pos-
sibilities for Jordan's hotels."
They also took note of the un-
usual furniture in their hotel
rooms, modern metal furniture
designed by Israeli sculptor Ilana
Gur, who uses a sculpted bird
hooked to a piece of furniture as
one of her trademarks.
