VOLUNTEERS

Ms. Winkelman said.
Volunteers like Rayna Kogan
have agreed to meet with a resi-
dent at least three times: once be-
fore the move, on the day of the
move and once afterward.
"I wanted to help," Ms. Kogan

During orientation, nursing
home administrators briefed vol-
unteers on their duties. On move-
in days (different residents will
move on different days), volunteers
will meet their adoptive residents
at Menorah House to provide a
warm welcome. Ms. Weinert
suggested they help unpack the
resident's belongings, hang up
a picture, decorate the room,
talk about holiday memories,
share stories, or even bring a
pet.
"The residents love pets,"
she said.
Ms. Weinert stressed the
importance of listening to the
residents' concerns. For resi-
dents with dementia, just a
smile or a hand in theirs pro-
vides comfort.

U S. Ambassador to Canada
James Blanchard had a
strong record in support of
Israel and the Jewish com-
munity while he was a congress-
man from Pleasant Ridge and as
Michigan's governor.
But he didn't go around saying
that his father was Jewish.
Last Friday, former Gov. Blan-
chard flew into Detroit from his
ambassador's post in Ottawa to
attend his father's funeral at the
Machpelah Cemetery chapel in
Ferndale.
His father, James R. Blan-
chard, died last week at his Mel-
bourne, Fla., home. He was 86.
Mr. Blanchard divorced in the
early 1950s when his son was 10.
"He was a good father until the
divorce," the former governor said.
"But I only saw him two or three
times between the time I was 10
and until I was in my early 30s."
Mr. Blanchard, born a Catholic,

converted to Judaism to marry
his second wife, Bessie Schwartz.
The couple then moved to Cali-
fornia where Mr. Blanchard
worked for Rockwell Interna-
tional. He held a Ph.D. from Ohio
State University in metallurgical
engineering, Gov. Blanchard said,
and worked at Los Alamos on the
U.S. nuclear program.
Mr. Blanchard was buried next
to his wife at Machpelah. She
died in the mid-1980s.
Gov. Blanchard, who is Uni-
tarian, said he and his sister did
not get to know their father "un-
til later in life, and by then he was
becoming senile. It is unfortunate
that he didn't get to know his kids
very well."
The governor said his father
belonged to several Jewish orga-
nizations when he lived in Cali-
fornia.
While a congressman, Gov.
