INFORMAL DINING ...

AT ITS BEST!

But none won any of the three
prizes given for the best costume
... First place went to Carol Cot-
ter in an excellent getup from
Cats, tail and all, that she had
made herself ... Her evening's
companion, Arthur Klein, had his
own shtick dressed as a king ...
second prize by a gal was for her
clever garb as a Hershey Kiss ...
and a gent in his Fu Manchu out-
fit took third place.
Yael Gross, sweet Excalibur
hostess, came as a pregnant
woman ... But she wasn't kid-
ding ... Yael's due date is in Jan-
uary ... Her parents, Vicki and
Ray Goldbaum, joined the fes-
tivities as a cowgirl and a Mexi-
can peon.
Many folks came in costume
but it was a good excuse for some
to dress very casually as what-
ever ... Like Ernie Palombo, Gi-
nopolis' day manager, who said
he was a racing driver ... Owner
Marty Wilk, head honcho of the
"Ex," had on his cowboy attire
and looked like a svelte roamer
of the range ... Suzie Marsh and
Dan Warren's lively quintet gave
out with a lot of dancing music.
One girl came as a cave lassie
with simulated leopard skin garb
and a bone through her blond
hair ... Among the Draculas, Ter-
ry Farrar had a cat companion in
Veronica Rehberg ... Another gal
dressed as a harem girl but
wouldn't get up and dance be-
cause the lass didn't think she
had on enough clothes.
If there had been a prize for
the most beautiful mask, Susan
Cohen, wife of Dr. Carl Cohen,
Sandy enjoy the feeling that their would have walked away with
food baskets are different ... and very little competition ... Her gor-
attempt to stay away from the geous, tall, high-style facial cov-
usual mundane items or trite de- er-up was brought back by Susan
from Italy, adding to her collec-
signs.
They even use recipes for cook- tion of 12 exotic masks.
It was a fun evening ... plenty
ies given to them by mothers and
grandmothers who have had of food, lots of dancing and an-
them in the family for many other theme party that Marty
and Excalibur are becoming
years.
Unusual is hardly the word for known for.
Maybe next year, Marty will
one request by a woman who
wanted her negligee sent in a have his parking attendants
basket to her husband's office ... dressed as blood-thirsty Count
They send baskets to kids in Draculas ... with instructions not
school with snacks and kosher to drive our cars to Transylvania.
CONGRATS ... to Dena Ja-
chicken soup.
What started three years ago cobs ... on her 25th birthday ...
with one employee, Sandy Ben- to barrister Mort Eskin ... on his
son, is now up to 45 ... in a busi- 60th birthday.
ANNUAL WILD game din-
ness built on repeat requests.
It's not to say that Marty Ben- ner by Bay Pointe Golf Club is
son wouldn't have been a suc- Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 ... Cocktails
cessful restaurateur had he and hors d'oeuvres at 5:30 p.m.,
chosen the route dad Alex Belin- and dinner 6:30 p.m., with Joey
sky wanted for him ... But he has Van entertaining ... $75 per per-
not strayed too far in his select- son also includes choice of five ap-
ed path ... a major reason for the petizers, soup, seven entrees, side
continual growth of American dishes and dessert.
A BIG New Year's Eve en-
Gourmet ... a birthday story of
gagement is on tap for pianist
success.
COUNT DRACULAS were David Syme, who'll be the Arri-
out in full fangs at Excalibur va Italia Rainbow Room attrac-
restaurant's first annual Hal- tion to bring in 1995 ... David's
loween party ... Four of them group will also supply music for
with long capes, white faces, hair dancing ... His next Arriva stint
slicked back a la Bela Lugosi, etc. is Nov. 27. LI

When American Gourmet
opened, Godiva Chocolates came
to them but Marty and Sandy
said they would take on the line
only if Godiva would eventually
become kosher ... the major can-
dy company is now under super-
vision of the Union of Orthodox
Jewish Congregations of Ameri-
ca and shipped by American
Gourmet all over the United
States, proudly bearing the OU.
Marty and Sandy also make
their own kosher candy, choco-
late-covered pretzels, Shabbat
treats of peanuts and pretzel clus-
ters, etc. ... They have the largest
kosher pareve candy selection in
Michigan.
Fifty flavors of coffee are fresh-
ly-roasted daily and have become
a big American Gourmet item ...
It now sells more Godiva coffee
than anyone in the state.
Every type of foodbasket imag-
inable is custom-made ... even
fat-free baskets.
It has become noted for prod-
ucts that cannot be gotten any-
where ... like pastrami salmon
... salmon that looks like and
tastes like pastrami.
Just like imaginative chefs,
Marty tries various ideas in look-
ing for unique tastes ... He and
