Chanukah Gifts
For Teachers
SUSAN PAPPAS SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
A
mong the many people
you'll want to remember
in your Chanukah gift list
are the teachers of your
children: Teachers' gifts can
range from the "small remem-
brance" to the more expensive
kind.
Daryle Roth, owner of Wrap
It Up, a new gift shop in the Or-
chard Mall in West Bloomfield,
refers to gifts at this time of the
year as "an acknowledgement ...
a thank you. It's a time of giving
so people buy gifts for teachers
now rather than the end of the
school year." She recommends
hand-crafted gifts, and among
her favorites this year are the
custom designed notecards made
from origami paper. A set of six
to ten notes and envelopes come
in a sleek contemporary package
and are priced from $7.00 to $25.
Another new item this year are
the beautiful bath oil bottles filled
with fruits and flowers. These
assorted bottles come in all dif-
ferent shapes and sizes and can
be grouped together to make an
interesting arrangement. They
are priced from $8 and up.
When asked about buying gifts
specifically for Chanukah, Ms.
Roth notes that any gift can be-
come a Chanukah gift when
placed into a Chanukah motif
bag that she carries in her store.
Elizabeth Green, owner of the
Elizabeth Green Boutique in
West Bloomfield, always stocks
her store with a variety of teach-
ers' gifts at this time of the year.
Teachers have told her that they
really appreciate the "useful" gift.
Personalized stationery is a big
seller, as well as notepads with
Hebrew lettering that says
"Teachers are very special!" The
colorful magnetic Star of David
notepad is a $5 and can be giv-
en with a special pen or pencil.
Ms. Green has unique ceramic
pens that come in a variety of
shapes, such as a cowboy, a ski-
er or a bird. These pens can last
a lifetime because they are easi-
ly filled with any Bic pen refill.
They are priced at $15 or with a
matching stand at $25.
She also suggests the new,
polymer clay link bracelets ($18)
with colorful beads that include
bright smiley faces. These beads
are hand-made, and the color
comes from the clay as no paint
is used. Another very useful and
unique gift for the teacher who
may find herself eating lunch at
her desk is the Snac Pac Cutlery
Set $8. This set includes a stain-
less steel knife, fork and spoon
that slides securely into a sleek,
elegantly designed holder that
contains a small salt and pepper
shaker.
When asked what people are
looking for when buying gifts for
teachers, Ms. Green said it de-
pended on how many teacher
gifts they were buying. The price
range starts at $3 and could go
up past $25. Ms. Green expects
the Lucite picture frame deco-
rated with Chanukah symbols,
such as menorahs, dreidels and
candles, to be a big seller. Inside
the frame are the words, "You
light up my life!" It's reasonably
priced at $16 while similar
frames can be found at much
higher prices.
If you are looking specifically
for your child's Hebrew or reli-
gious school teacher, Chaim Roet-
ter of Esther's Judaica Gift World
in the Crosswinds Mall in West
Bloomfield, has no shortage of
ideas. His favorite this year is
the solid milk chocolate box with
a map of Israel molded into the
chocolate box top. Gold foiled gelt
fills the inside of the box ($20).
For the A+ teacher, the gift set of
a mug, notepad and pencil with
the saying "Aleph + Teacher" at
$10 might be perfect. Mr. Roet-
ter also suggested Havdalah can-
dles of which the selection is
varied and vast. These candles
are hand-crafted and come in
many beautiful colors and sizes
($11-$20).
Stain-glass Hebrew teacher at Rachel's
Needlepoint and Judaica Gifts.
Mr. Roetter's wit became ap-
parent when he recommended
a couple of other gifts. He sug-
gests a sterling silver dreidle
($20) for a Hebrew teacher and
his comment to go with it was,
"Teacher, you're TOPS!" Also, to
wish a teacher an excellent life,
a solid brass paperweight ($15)
in the shape of "Chai" would be
appropriate.
Rachel Einstandig of Rachel's
Needlepoint and Judaica Gifts in
Charter House Apartments in
Southfield had some suggestions
for the teachers or gift givers who
like to needlepoint. Coffee mugs,
