The
NAMES Project
AIDS Memorial
Quilt
The community-wide display of
The NAMES Project AIDS Me-
morial Quilt will be housed at
the Jewish Community Center,
Maple/Drake Campus, Sun-
day, November 27 —Thursday,
December 8, 1994. Panels also
will be displayed at the JPM
building in Oak Park.
MJAC is sponsoring this display
of the Quilt to coincide with
Hanuka and World AIDS Day,
December 1. Throughoutthese
12 days, religious school stu-
dents will be taught about AIDS
from a specially written and
tested curriculum. In addition,
people of all ages are invited
to workshops featuring experts
in their fields and MJAC facilita-
tors. The Quilt display is open to
the public during regular Cen-
ter hours.
Inspired by the folk art tradi-
tions of quilting and sewing
bees, The NAMES Project AIDS
Memorial Quilt has become an
international symbol of the fight
against HIV/AIDS. Each panel
bears the name of someone
who has died from this disease.
The power of the Quilt is the
way it simply and profoundly
conveys the humanity behind
the statistics. For the first time in
Detroit, panels will be shown
from the Israel NAMES Project
as well.

Written for teens and their parents, this
curriculum deals with AIDS education and
Jewish values. This three-part series is the
program MJAC presents in religious
schools. By offering it at the JCC, we are
hoping to attract families who want to
communicate about AIDS together.
