Investigation's Uniform Crime
Report claim 1,054 incidents of
anti-Jewish crimes occurred in
the United States, down from
1,084 in 1992.
Dick Lobenthal, director of the
Anti-Defamation League's Michi-
gan Region, said the note did not
follow a pattern usually seen in
anti-Semitic epithets. For exam-
ple, the note was not specifical-
ly addressed to the recipient and
did not refer to the recipient's re-
ligion.
"I would presume that anti-
Semitism was not the motive for
the letter. Rather, it was gratu-
itously included," Mr. Lobenthal
said.
Gratuitous or not, Donna Gold-
smith, who found the parapher-
nalia, said she is still concerned
about the incident. She moved
four years ago to the neighbor-
hood which has a high Jewish
population.
"Police think it is a prank but
I don't think so. A prank is like
throwing eggs at someone's house
or driving over someone's lawn,"
she said. "This was meant to in-
timidate and scare. It goes be-
yond a prank."
Although the family was
frightened by the incident, they
are comforted by the reaction
from Jews and non-Jews who
have called to offer support.
"It is encouraging to see
that people everywhere are
disturbed by this," she said. "I
think it speaks well of the corn-
munity."

B'nai Moshe Merger
'nai David members on
Sunday turned down the
proposed merger of Con-
gregation B'nai David into
Congregation B'nai Moshe.
While 205 members voted in
favor of the proposal and 136 vot-
ed against, the merger needed an
additional 10 B'nai David mem-
bers to approve for it to pass.
Some 106 eligible B'nai David
voters did not cast their ballots.
B'nai Moshe members, voting
at the same time, approved the
merger 615-41.
Some B'nai David members
who opposed the merger favor
building a new synagogue on
Maple Road near Halsted in West
Bloomfield.
B'nai David president Philip
Bolton said, "We hope to build."
He said the synagogue's execu-
tive board would meet this week
"and we'll see what will happen."

NOVEMBER
The incident was discovered at
approximately 8:20 a.m. Sunday
when police and fire officials were
called to the residence of Alan
and Donna Goldsmith in the
29000 block of Arlington Way.
They told police they believed
they had discovered a pipe bomb
in their curbside newspaper box.
Police found a fire extinguish-
er and a note in the box. The note,
not specifically addressed, told
the residents of the home that
they would need the fire extin-
guisher if they left the house. The
writer included swastikas and an
unknown symbol at the bottom
of the note, Lt. Bledsoe said.
Police believe the note came
from someone who attended the
party held to watch the George
Foreman/Michael Moorer boxing
match on television.
Investigators are examining
the note and the fire extinguish-
er for fingerprints.
