T

here's a bizarre demo-
graphic trend in the former
Soviet Union. As Jews
leave, the Jewish popula-
tion stays the same, says Alexan-
der Nayman of Kiev.
Mr. Nayman, who visited De-
troit last week, leads groups ded-
icated to wiping out
anti-Semitism in the former So-
viet Union. He says the demo-
graphic paradox is not due to a
faulty census. Rather, it's the
product of social change.
Since the fall of the Iron Cur-
tain five years ago, thousands of
Jews have immigrated to Amer-
ica, Israel and other countries,
but the thousands who remain in
their homeland are emerging, as
Jews, from the shadows of Com-
munist-style atheism, he says.
In the Ukraine alone, there are
an estimated 500,000 Jews whom
gentiles in the Ukraine and oth-
er areas are greeting with in-
creasing openness.
"On the whole, there is an at-
mosphere of tolerance," Mr. Nay-
man says.
But people's tolerance also ex-
tends to extremist organizations
with nationalistic and anti-Se-
mitic agendas. That has Mr. Nay-
man worried. Demonstrations
attract between 100 and 150 peo-
ple who carry signs accusing
Jews of exploitation, heinous
crimes and destroying the

Ukrainian intelligence system. A
common complaint is that Jews
are too politically powerful.
"The extremist organizations
have almost no resistance," Mr.
Nayman says. 'It's dangerous be-
cause Jews don't have any knowl-
edge to reply to national
extremism and anti-Semitism.
They are forced to be silent, un-
able to refute anti-Semitic pro-
paganda."
Last week, Mr. Nayman visit-
ed relatives in Detroit, where he
arranged a meeting with Richard
Lobenthal, Michigan Region di-
rector of the Anti-Defamation
League. Later, he met with Ken
Jacobson of ADL's national offices
in New York.
Mr. Nayman is trying to do his
part to eliminate anti-Semitism
in the former Soviet Union. The
key: bolstering the pride and
knowledge of Jews so they're
equipped to fight.

"They are forced to
be silent."

COLORWORKS ISTUDIO OF INTERIOR DESIGN 1111

— Alexander Nayman

Various signs point to the suc-
cess of Mr. Nayman's undertak-
ings. As regional director of the
Association for Jewish Studies
and Jewish Culture, the former
engineer sponsors lectures and
conferences on topics like Israel,
the Holocaust and Ukrainian-
Jewish relations. The events,
which take place in several re-
gions throughout the former So-
viet Union, attract between 60
and 150 people, age 40 and old-
er. Younger people attend Jew-
ish youth groups that are
springing up throughout the
land, he says.
Mr. Nayman also serves as
vice-chairman of the Association
for International Peace and Con-
sent in the Ukraine, an organi-
