Fingeroot, a 6-foot, 210-pound senior defensive tackle, nailed Ca- nine in the backfield with 4:29 left in the game while Rice was attempting a two-point conver- sion following its final touchdown. Canine pump-faked but didn't shake Fingeroot, who tackled the quarterback with authority. The sack ignited a loud celebration on the Berkley sidelines and in the stands. It was Berkley's first playoff game ever. Rice, a four-time state champion, has been in the play- offs 12 times in the past 13 years. "This has got to be the biggest win in the history of our football team," said Berkley coach Pat Fox. Linemen Greg Lusardi (6-0, 230) and Ben Gitler (6-1, 190) also made key defensive plays for Berkley during the rainy after- noon. Lusardi, a senior who is one of the Bears' four captains, recov- ered a Rice fumble on the War- riors' 32-yard-line on the second offensive play of the game. That set up the first Berkley touch- down. With Rice threatening to score on its second possession, Gitler, a junior, sacked Canine for a sev- en-yard loss which put the ball on the Warriors' 15. The drive ended with a Berkley intercep- tion. Berkley (8-2) is one of only eight teams still in the hunt for the Class A state championship. The Bears will face Royal Oak Kim- ball (9-1) for the re- gion championship at 1:30 p.m. Satur- day at Kimball. Berkley will be look- ing to avenge a 27-0 loss to Kimball on Oct. 7. During the state regional and championship tournaments, Hit- sky blocked two of the three 4-me- ter penalty shots he faced. He was named third-team All State. MELISSA AXNER and her sis- ter Stacey Axner each won one individual event and were mem- bers of a victorious relay quartet as they led the West Bloomfield High School girls swimming team to a 124-62 triumph over Troy Athens on Oct. 27. The win gave West Bloomfield its first perfect dual-meet record in team history. The Lakers cap- tured all 10 of their duals this fall. Against Athens, Melissa won the 200 freestyle in 1:59.99 and Stacey captured the 200 IM in 2:21.79. They both were on the winning 200 freestyle relay team, which was timed in 1:44.79. Julia Music was on the Lakers' victorious 400 freestyle relay unit. That group won in 3:59.81. AMY SIEGEL finished 10th in a personal-record 20:38 and Jenni Rose was 29th in 21:36, helping the Berkley girls cross-country team place third in a Class A re- gional held Oct. 29 at Kimball. Thanks to its finish, Berkley qualified for the state meet, which was held in Grand Rapids. Also for the Bears at the re- gional, Diana Kozloff finished 49th in 23:04. SAM POLK of Berkley placed 47th in 18:09 in a Class A boys cross-country regional at Kim- ball. DAVID LEVITT finished 22nd in 18:45, helping Berkley place third of 16 schools in the boys race in the 9th/10th Cross Country Invitation- al held Oct. 25 at Kimball. Also for the Bears, Sam Polk was 30th in 19:11, Peter Rose was 32nd in 19:13, Brent Siegel was 62nd in 20:39 and Scott Adelman was MIKE HITSKY, the 94th in 22:58. sophomore goalie for Berkley scored 97 Birmingham Groves points.
