he Women's Division of the
Jewish Federation of Met-
ropolitan Detroit held its
47th annual Institute fea-
turing Dr. Sonya Friedman
Dr. Friedman spoke to 800
women at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek on "Things my mother
never told me ... I'm going to tell
you."
liana Panush Greenberg,
chairman, attributed the record-
breaking crowd to the speaker,
the volunteer committee and to
new members. "Dr. Friedman
was clearly a huge draw. We
have a lot of new names, new
faces, and the people on the com-
mittee did a fabulous job." Ms.
Greenberg noted that women are
looking for a mix of content and
enjoyment when they hear a
speaker. "She (Dr. Friedman) is
the perfect formula. Besides, we
are all mothers and daughters,
and we have issues."
Dr. Friedman dove right into
the issues with a riveting speech
that often received spontaneous
applause. She began discussing
her own mother, who was a de-
pendent woman. At age 14, she
met her future mother-in-law
who lit "an eternal flame" for her
to become an independent
woman.
"Women should give up the
guilt complex and get a gelt (the
Yiddish word for money) com-
plex," said Dr. Friedman. She ex-
plained that money gives women
independence and power. She
mentioned that women are not a

minority at 51 percent of the pop-
ulation, and that they have the
power to change things in soci-
ety. "We must be angry with the
status quo and understand the
power of one."
Dr. Friedman also learned
that it's important to make deci-
sions that benefit your own in-

terests. She would hope that
mothers teach their daughters to
answer these questions in order:
Who am I? What do I chose to do
with my life? Who do I chose to
share it with?
After seven years as a host of
a daily talk show on Cable Net-
work News, Dr. Friedman is back
in town resuming her private
practice in Birmingham. Judg-
ing from the response in the au-
dience, she should have a large
following.
Some of the Institute commit-
tee members include: Susie Mil-
grom, associate chairman;
