Be- sides using the archives in Basel, Mr. Rhein is in touch with offi- cials at the Herzl Museum in Jerusalem, which will lend many documents to Basel for the ex- hibit, some of which were origi- nally owned by the city then given to the museum when it was founded. The exhibit has already gen- erated interest form other muse- ums and institutions eager to have it on loan after its premiere in Basel. In the United States, for example, officials at the Jewish museums in New York and Los Angeles have expressed interest. "And the city of Vienna is very in- terested because that's where Herzl was born," said Mr. Rhein. Besides the exhibit, the cele- bration will almost certainly in- clude a meeting of the World Zionist Congress in Basel. Even though the organization still has to officially approve the plan, it is very likely that the group, which meets in Jerusalem every five years, will make an excep- tion both of site and of year so that its members can convene in Basel in August 1997. "This meeting will start in Basel with people from all over the world attending," says Mr. Rhein. "Then they will go on to Israel in special chartered planes." The Basel to Israel route is symbolic: Not only did the first Zionist Congress meet in Basel, but also the 10th one, in 1946, just before the State of Israel was founded. Afterwards, they were held in Jerusalem. To help coor- dinate all the ideas and plans, Mr. Rhein has formed a core working group of eight members, both Jews and non Jews. They include two professors from the University of Basel, staff mem- bers from the Jewish Museum in Basel, and the members of the Swiss-Israel Friendship Society, a Christian-Jewish group. He's also building a network of con- tacts in Europe, Israel and the United States. He's in contact, for example, with the Swiss cultural attache to the United States and with the Israeli ambassador to Switzer- land, Rafi Gvir. "He's very in- volved and has already made a number of contacts in Israel," said Mr. Rhein. Meanwhile, Mr. Rhein, al- ready at work for a year on the event, has a game plan mapped out for the next three years, too. `The beginning stage is over, and the next step will take us to July 1995," he says. "It will involve co- ordinating everything with Israel because this is a real Zionist event. "One hundred years ago, we had a very important event in Basel," he says. "And I hope that the anniversary we're planning for 1997 will be another very spe- cial event that will also make his- tort'." ❑ • 20 Years Experience • Senior Discounts Experienced and Personal Service II/ RENA TRAVEL & TOURS Florida, Las Vegas, Wifornia, Arizona, New York, Chap, Israel, Hawaii, Paris, Thailand, Australia, AND MANY MORE- FOR AIRLINE TICKETS 810.661-6677 YOUR OVER SEAS SPECIALIST!
