Congregation Beth Shalom Empire Turkeys To Help Yad Ezra ALAN HITSKY ASSOCIATE EDITOR You've got an uncle in the furni- ture business," is an old Detroit advertising refrain. The Yad Ezra kosher food bank is doing one better. It has an uncle in the kosher poultry business. When Leslie Kleiman heard about Empire Kosher Poultry's "Pound for Pound" promotion, he asked the company to help Yad Ezra. Mr. Kleiman is owner of Mor- ris Kosher Poultry in Hazel Park, the Detroit area wholesaler for Empire. Last year just before Thanks- giving, Empire asked consumers to collect weight labels from its kosher turkeys. Labels sent to the company were tabulated, and the total weight of the purchased turkeys was matched in dona- • tions of Empire Kosher products to national food banks. "It was a last-minute thing," said Empire spokeswoman Bir- gitta Wade, but it led to 3 tons of kosher poultry being donated to food banks Empire tried a sim- ilar promotion in St. Louis last spring, and it resulted in 2 tons of contributions. When Mr. Kleiman heard the company would repeat the offer nationally for Thanksgiving this year, he asked Empire to give Michigan donations to Yad Ezra. The company also will send par- ticipating consumers a certificate of recognition and a discount coupon. "I told them we have a kosher food bank locally," Mr. Kleiman said. "If you're going to donate anyway, donate to people who have to have kosher." Yad Ezra is one of Mr. Kleiman's accounts. He also con- tributes his own funds to the or- ganization. "Out of all the -T, accounts I would like to see de- crease, this one is increasing," he said. Last month, Yad Ezra gave 37,204 pounds of food to 996 fam- ilies (1,826 individuals). Jeannette Eizelman, execu- tive director of the 4 112-year-old agency in Oak Park, said Yad Ezra gives out about 1,000 cut- up whole chickens each month. She said the agency buys 100 cases (1,400 chickens) at a time from Morris Kosher Poultry at a cost of around $7,500.0 %t To help Yad Ezra and to re- ceive a discount coupon, send weight labels from Empire Kosher turkeys purchased be- tween Nov. 15 and 30 to Pound for Pound, Empire Kosher Poultry, PO Box 165, Mif- flintown, PA 17059. • • ;X, • Nr:::•:,.;;;:e Mie g iin a • AUCTION Aro • Entertainment • Dessert Buffet • Excitement • Door Prizes Jewelry • Furs • Artwork Vacations • Gift.
