JACK M. TARNOW, 81, of Co-
conut Creek, Fla., died Oct. 19.
Mr. Tarnow, born in Windsor,
Ontario, Canada, was a chem-
ical engineer and graduate of
Detroit's Lawrence Institute of
Technology. Formerly of Oak
Park, he was an active member
of B'nai Moshe Synagogue, a 50
year member of B'riai B'rith,
and past president of Louis
Marshall Lodge. In recent
years, he dedicated much of this
time to Beth Shalom Syna-
gogue in Coconut Creek. He is
survived by his wife of 52 years,
Stelle (Teeman) Tarnow; son
and daughter-in-law, Michael
and Merle Tarnow of Mend-
ham, N.J., daughter, Jill M.
Kaye of Oak Park; four grand-
children, Jessica and Noah
Tarnow, Kathleen and Corey
Kaye. Graveside services were
held at Shalom Memorial Park,
Palatine (Chicago), Ill.
SHARON THOMAS, 48, of
Reno, Nev., formerly of South-
field, passed away Oct. 5. She
was a guidance counselor at
Hunter Lake Middle School in
Reno. She was the daughter of
the late Harry and Lillian
Thomas of Southfield. She is
survived by her children, Gre-
gory Glass and Brittany Glass
of Reno; brother and sister-in-
law, Lenny and Ann Thomas of
Van Nuys, Calif.; sister and
brother-in-law, Ellie Thomas-
Glass and J. Roy Glass of Win-
netka, Calif; sister-in-law, Gale
Glass. Services were held at He-
brew Cemetery through Wal-
tons Chapel in Reno.
MICHAEL YAKS, 62, of
Southfield, died Oct. 28. He is
survived by his wife, Nina; son
and daughter-in-;law, Yaakov
and Simona of Farmington
Hills, daughter and son -in-law,
Rada and Igor Buksdorf of West
Bloomfield; sister and brother-
in-law, Leah and Isaac Brotsky
of Israel; two grandchildren.

CHARLES L. VAUGHAN, 78,
of Southfield, died Oct. 31. Mr.
Vaughan is survived by his
beloved companion, Brenda
Rose. He also is survived by
Michael and Helene Rose, Lau-
rie and Tom Jablonski, Jillian
and Jessica Joblonski. Inter-
ment at Roseland Park Ceme-
tery. Arrangements by the Ira

ANNA WEINBERG, 93, of
North Miami Beach, Fla., for-
merly of Detroit, died Oct. 23.
She was the beloved wife of the
late Harry Weinberg. She is
survived by her daughter and
son-in-law, Aarone and Joel
Colton of Maryland and Flori-
da; grandsons and grand-
daughters, Richard and Kathy
Rice of Fort Lauderdale. Fla.,
Lisa and David Pastor of New-
ton Highlands, Mass.; great-
granddaughters, Shana and
Hanna Pastor. Burial was in
Lakeside Memorial Park, Mia-
mi.
JOSEPH YOUNG, 81, of
Farmington, died Oct. 25. Mr.
Young was a teacher at Detroit
High School where he taught
economics and government for
38 years. He graduated Wayne
State University with a bach-
elor's and master's degree and
was active in the Jewish Com-
munity Center Bridge Group
and the Berkley Bridge Group.
He was the beloved husband of
the late Mary. He is survived by
his son, Alan of San Francisco;
daughter and son-in-law, San-
dra and Ed Lawlor of Rochester
Hills. Mr. Young also is sur-
vived by Evelyn Miller. Inter-
ment at Clover Hill Park Ceme-
tery. Memorial contributions

Richard Cohen
RICHARD COHEN, New
York (JTA) — Richard Cohen,
71, media spokesman for a large
cross-section of Jewish organi-
zations and individuals, died
Oct 30. Mr. Cohen was a semi-
nal participant in the struggle
for Soviet Jewry. He served as
chief press officer for the three
World Conferences on Soviet
Jewry, in Brussels (1971 and
1976) and Jerusalem (1983). He
authored Let My People Go, the
first comprehensive history of
the Soviet Jewry struggle. Mr.
Cohen was born in 1923 in New
York. After his war service, he
spent four years in Paris work-
ing for the American Jewish
Joint Distribution Committee.
During that time Cohen was
also a correspondent for the
Jewish Telegraphic Agency. He
then spent four years working
for the JDC in New York in
public relations. He then
worked in the St. Louis region-
al office of the American Jew-
ish Congress and continued
with AJCongress in New York
as public relations director, as-
sistant executive director and
finally associate executive di-
rector.
