all is one of the most excit-
ing times to visit Toronto.
In the fall, one can enjoy a
different play every night
for days. Concerts, dance, music,
lectures, and exhibits, in abun-
dance, all start their new season
in the fall. For singles, the Jew-
ish community's programs and
facilities offer many opportuni-
ties to meet people and to expe-
rience the city on a more personal
level.
The Gershwin musical come-
dy Crazy for You (at the Royal
Alexandra Theatre), and Miss
Saigon (at the Princess of Wales
Theatre), both make for great
evenings out. Show Boat, the hit
revival of the classic Kern-Ham-
merstein musical, is delighting
audiences at the North York Per-
forming Arts Centre, and Phan-
tom of the Opera is in its sixth
year at the Pantages theatre. An-
other musical not to be missed is
Forever Plaid, at the New York-
er Theatre.
Noel Coward's comedy Hay
Fever, with the Canadian Stage
Company, is running at the St.
Lawrence Centre for the Arts.
Nothing Sacred, at the Winter
Garden Theatre, is a play based
on the Russian classic novel Fa-
thers and Sons by Ivan Turgenev.
Lisa, a play scheduled to run
Dec. 28-30 at the North York Per-
forming Arts Center, tells the sto-
ry of a courageous Jewish girl's
experiences during the Holo-
caust. A concert reading of The
Night the KAPO , a play by R.
Mayzels, winner of the 1994 Jew-
ish Theatre Comittee's Playvvrit-
ing Contest, will be held at the
Bloor Jewish Community Center
on Nov. 13.
The Toronto Jewish Film So-
ciety will show The Righteous En-
emy on Nov. 6 at the Art Gallery
of Ontario's Jackman Hall.
For singles, there is the Sec-
ond Annual Jewish Bachelor
Auction at the Crown Plaza on
Nov. 10, Sunday evenings there
is a sing-along with the Narayev-
er Community Singers at the
Feldenkreis Centre.
For a feeling of community
downtown there are Friday night
services and dinner at the Anshei
Minsk Synagogue.
The Floating Jewish Singles
group holds monthly Oneg Shab-
bat gatherings at different syna-
gogues in the city, for singles 40
to 65. For information, call (905)
771-6623.
A large variety of music pro-
grams is available in the fall. The
Canadian Opera Company pre-
sents Donizetti's Don Pasquale,
and Mozart's ll re pastore during
November.
The National Ballet of Cana-
da had its debut in Israel last .
spring; its new season in Toron-
to includes Swan Lake and The
Merry Widow, which will be seen
during November.
As for museums, the most fa-
mous exhibit this fall in Toron-
to features 80 rarely-seen
Impressionist, post-impression-
ist, and Modernist French paint-
ings from the Barnes collection.
This is its only appearance in
Canada, and its continues at the
Art Gallery of Ontario until Dec.
31.
The Koffler Gallery, at the
Bathurst Jewish Center, has an
exhibit of photo etching, dealing
with memory and identity, by
June-Clark Greenberg, until Dec.
30.
"A Passion for Collecting" is an
exhibition of Judaica from the
Goodman Estate at the Kanner
Heritage Museum of Baycreast
Centre. It has a broad selection
of items - Jewish postcards, art
works by Szyk and Rapaport, and
various religious objects.
Another exhibit, "One Hun-
dred Years of Yiddish Canada,"
is on view at the Beth Tzedec Mu-
seum.
Bazaars and fairs are great
places to meet people. Toronto's
18th Annual Jewish Book Fair is
scheduled for Nov. 5-14, with an
agenda of interesting speakers
and stimulating programs.
