niors last school year will
be honored Nov. 7 at the 10th an-
nual induction banquet of the
Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame.
Jennifer Gruber and Joshua
Sukenic won Hall of Fame schol-
arships which will help defray the
costs of their first-year college tu-
ition.
Ryan Fried, Jared Miller and
Abbie Schwartzberg were named
the Hall of Fame's High School
Athletes of the Year.
Gruber was a 4.0 student at
Southfield-Lathrup who played
tennis and volleyball there. She
now is enrolled in the engineer-
ing program at Michigan State
University.
Sukenic had a 3.25 grade-point
average at West Bloomfield,
where he played baseball. He also
is attending Michigan State, en-
rolled in the James Madison Col-
lege program.
Both Gruber and Sukenic were
members of the Detroit Maccabi
youth sports program. Gruber
played soccer and Sukenic played
softball.
Fried was a basketball and
football standout at Berkley. In
1993, he was named to the Asso-
ciated Press Class AAA All-State
football squad. He is attending
Tulane University, where he
hopes to play football if he can re-
cover sufficiently from knee
surgery he underwent in No-
vember 1993.
Miller was a four-time Class B
All-State tennis player at An-
dover. He attends the Universi-

Schwarzberg was a member of
the junior varsity wrestling squad
at Berkley when she was a se-
nior. She also competed in swim-
ming, gymnastics and softball
during her high school days.
Now a student at Arizona
State University, Schwarzberg
remains active in wrestling. Ear-
lier this year, she placed second
in the U.S. women's freestyle na-
tionals and team trials.
The Hall of Fame induction
banquet, which will be held at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek in
Southfield, will begin at 6 p.m. ❑
