3 WAYS TO BUY A CAR New Rules For Servicemen Jerusalem (JTA) — The death of Capt. Nir Poraz, who was killed in a failed attempt to rescue ab- ducted soldier Nachshon Wax- man, has prompted a campaign to .re-evaluate Israel Defense Force procedures for acceptina into combat or elite units the chil- dren of those who have died in the line of duty. Capt. Poraz, 23, of Ramat Hasharon, was the only son of Maoz Poraz, a pilot who was shot down during the 1973 Yom Kip- pur War. Nir Poraz was two years old at the time of his fa- ther's death. His mother, Mati, raised him and his two sisters alone. The elder Poraz, an El Al pilot, also was the first officer on an El Al flight hijacked to Algeria in 1968. He was wounded by his captors, and held 40 days before he was released. "He insisted that he be draft- • ed into an elite unite," Ramat Hasharon's mayor, Efraim Hiris, said at Nir Poraz's funeral. "He came from a family like that; it couldn't have been any other way." Under current regulations, a child from a family that has al- ready lost a son or a parent in the line of duty must have parental permission to join a combat or elite unit. Those who are only children must also obtain per- mission. Ofra Friedman, the chairman of Na'amat, the women's branch of the Histadrut Labor Federa- tion, sent a letter to Prime Min- ister Yitzhak Rabin this week calling on him to find another way of classifying these soldiers. "These parents are torn be- tween the entreaties of the child to serve in a fighting unit, and their fears of the implications of the signature," the letter said. Mr. Friedman said that in such cases, if the child is killed, parents feel tremendous guilt on top of their loss. Israel, Rwanda Ties Established United Nations (JTA) — Israel and Rwanda have resumed diplo- matic relations, broken off in 1973 during the Yom Kippur War. Ambassador Gad Ya'acobi, Is- rael's permanent representative to the United Nations, signed the accord restoring ties with his Rwandan counterpart, Ambas- sador Marzi Bakuramutsa, at the Israeli mission to the United Na- tions on Oct. 11. At the ceremony, Mr. Ya'acobi spoke of Israel's recent assistance to Rwandan refugees in Zaire. TAMAROFF BUICK • HONDA • NISSAN • IZUZU • DODGE New - Used or Leasing Open Mon. & Thurs.
