Jerusalem (JTA) -- Despite the
tragic conclusion to the attempt
to free kidnapped Israeli soldier
Cpl. Nachshon Waxman from his
Hamas captors, the Israeli Cab-
inet has decided to persevere in
its peace initiative with the Pales-
tinians.
Following what was the worst
crisis in Israeli-Palestinian deal-
ings since the start of Palestin-
ian self-rule in May, the Cabinet
agreed to resume negotiations
with the Palestinians and to lift
a closure that had been imposed
on the Gaza Strip.
Talks between Israeli and
Palestine Liberation Organiza-
tion negotiators over future Pales-
tinian elections were scheduled
to resume in Cairo.
The night before the Cabinet
session, tens of thousands of Is-
raelis attended the funeral of Cpl.
Waxman, who was killed by his
Hamas captors during a com-
mando raid launched by the Is-
rael Defense Force.
Burial services also were held
in the military section of the Kiry-
at Shaul cemetery for Capt. Nir
Poraz of Ramat Hasharon. Cpt.
Poraz was killed while leading
the commando unit that tried to
storm the West Bank safe house
in which Cpl. Waxman was be-
ing held.
Twelve other soldiers were
wounded, one moderately and the
others lightly, in the rescue at-
tempt.
In addition, three members of
Hamas were killed in the com-
mando raid. They were identified

as Salah Jadalla of Gaza, Taisir
Natshe of Jerusalem and Abdel
Kareem Bader of Al Ram in the
West Bank. Two Hamas accom-
plices were captured.

Border Quiet
After Attacks

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's north-
ern border fell quiet over the
weekend after being targeted by
rocket attacks fired by the Islamic
fundamentalist Hezbollah move-
ment operating in southern
Lebanon.
At least three separate waves
of Katyusha rockets were fired
by Hezbollah at northern Israel
from Oct. 20-21.
No casualties were reported
from the shelling, which drove Is-
raelis into bomb shelters and re-
inforced rooms, but one home was
damaged by a direct hit and fields
in the Galilee region were set on
fire.
According to Israeli news re-
ports, U.S. government officials
had urged Syria, the leading pow-
er broker in Lebanon, to halt the
rocket attacks.
Hezbollah officials said the
rocket assaults came in reprisal
for the Israeli shelling on Oct. 19
of the Lebanese town of
Nabatiya, a town of 60,000 lo-
cated north of the security zone
that Israel maintains in south-
ern Lebanon.
Israeli officials said the shelling,
had been ordered to stop a sus-
pected Hezbollah terror squad.
