OP AN OPEN LETTER TO: THE PRIME MINISTER OF ISRAEL, MR. YITZCHAK RABIN FROM: THE COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX RABBIS OF GREATER DETROIT October 21, 1994 I The Honorable Mr. Yitzchak Rabin Prime Minister of Israel Jerusalem, Israel The Council Of Rabbis of Greater Detroit expresses its very deep concern over the situation in Israel. 1 Despite the euphoria surrounding the signing of the peace accords, a great danger remains for the Jewish People. Mr. Arafat, the reformed "peacenik," is not the man he is portrayed as, by the glorifying media and the secular Jewish establishment. The only difference between the Hamas and the PLO is the approach and method, to destroy Israel. At no time did Yasir ever drop his blood drenched knife. He merely switched hands for a handshake. Mr. Arafat has broken every agreement that he has ever made, including the now famous Oslo agreement. Why should we take, the PLO at its word when the PLO continues to: 1.) Call for the Jihad (Holy War) against the Jewish People, (Arafat in Johannesburg, 8 months after the accord was signed). 0 2.) Supply PLO "police" weapons to Hamas terrorists who shot and killed Israelis in Jerusalem two weeks ago. (The PLO never commented on how their weapons got into Hamas hands.) 3.) Maintain their Covenant that calls for the destruction of the Jewish State regardless of how much we chop up our land first. (This is despite the fact that this was a major promise of Arafat's and "absolutely essential" require- ment of Rabin.) 4.) Allow open training of some 3,000 Hamas terrorists now taking place under the beneficent eyes of the PLO. (A camera crew filmed Hamas terrorists preparing openly to enter Israel to carry out murderous attacks.) 5.) Provide llamas with the ability to acquire "vast arsenals of automatic weapons and grenades, and hundreds of pounds of deadly explosives," NY Times, October 20, 1994. (This is now minus about forty pounds already used in Tel Aviv.) 6.) Refuse to arrest known terrorists in Gaza. (Last month a Hamas operative was shot fleeing to Gaza after he murdered an Israeli. The PLO refused to arrest him because he was "too seriously wounded." The murderer walked out of Shifa Hospital in Gaza City the next day. 7.) Make a great show of cracking down and arresting llamas terrorists. In August, after much fanfare in the media, 30 Hamas terrorists were arrested. They were released (quietly) because of "lack of evidence" — THE VERY NEXT DAY. 8.) Allow Abu Khalid Al-Masri, and hundreds like him, to operate under their noses, dispatching terrorists throughout Israel to murder and torture their victims. It is about time we believe Yasir Arafat. We must take him very seriously when he calls for continuing violence against the Jews (Dec. 31, 1993) by continuation of the intifada "until victory, until victory, until victory." He is not ready to drop his knife, why must we extend our neck? THE COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX RABBIS OF METROPOLITAN DETROIT CALLS UPON THE STATE OF ISRAEL NOT TO CONTINUE RECKLESSLY PLACING WEAPONS AND POWER IN THE HANDS OF YASIR ARAFAT AND THE PLO. NO EXTENSION OF THE AUTONOMY REGIONS AND ARMING OF THESE TERRORISTS SHOULD EVEN BE CON- SIDERED UNTIL WE ARE ABLE TO ASSURE OUR PEOPLE THAT THEY WILL BE ABLE TO LIVE IN REAL PEACE. MAY G-D HELP US REACH THE TRUE PEACE WE SO DESPERATELY SEEK. 0) COUNCIL OF ORTHODOX RABBIS OF METROPOLITAN DETROIT 17071 West Ten Mile Road Southfield, MI 48075 1-810-559-5005 FAX 1-810-559-5202 _The Council of Orthodox Rabbis urges all Jews to express their feelings by writing to Prime Minister Rabin, The Knesset, Jerusalem, Israel, or FAX to 202-364-5610. In addition, we ask you to contact your congressman-and ask him to do what he can to prevent•the U.S.A. from pressuring Israel to make unwise concessions. CO CC LL1 0:1 6 1
