unanimously condemned the

itorial state that while Mr.
Arafat refrains from denouncing
terror, "Israelis question his
commitment to peace ... Mr.
Arafat must realize that any
truce with llamas is oppor-
tunistic and temporary on
Hamas' part."

the couple sequestered them-
selves for three months so
they could produce the premier
issue of the quarterly, What's
Next?
Said Ms. Diamond: "We want-
ed to create something new, a lib-
eral [and non-Orthodox] Jewish
periodical that is spiritually in-
clined and reader-friendly for the
unaffiliated and disenfranchised,
alike."
The result is a 27-page black-
and-white magazine with 14 ar-
ticles by such pioneers on the
Jewish spiritual frontier as rab-
bis Laurence Kushner and
Harold Schulweis and writer/so-
cial activist Arthur Waskow.
Five are reprinted from either
books or other Jewish publica-
tions.
Their topics range from writer
Rodger Kamenetz's encounter
with the Dalai Lama to author
Anita Diamant's account of the
movable chairs in the synagogue
she attends: "After a service ...
the chairs are never quite where
they were when the congregation
walked in.. I like to think that re-
flects something about the peo-
ple, too; that they have moved,
too, like the chairs."
