EUROPEAN SELECTION ourselves look and feel beauti- ful and handsome. And it is im- portant to do so if it helps us to function normally and well. However, this cannot be the only source of beauty. The clothes we wear and the products we put in our hair and on our bodies are at best superficial and temporary. With time, even the most ex- pensive and well-tailored cloth- ing cannot hide the effects of old age and the deterioration of our bodies' outer shell. We must, therefore, look deeper into the soul for the source of a mor last- ing beauty. Rebecca is to become the moth- er of Jacob and Esau, a matriarch of the people of Israel. Because of this, it is not surprising that we are led to see her great beau- ty. She is a woman who takes re- sponsibility for maintaining her physical beauty. And she is a woman who takes responsibility for the rest of the community by advocating and acting on behalf of other people. Leon Kass, in his recent article "A Woman for All Seasons," explains that each time he reads these stories, he falls in love with Rebecca — and who wouldn't? He tells us that "She is good looking, pure, and gener- ous; she is kind to strangers and dumb animals, well beyond the necessary minimum." Beauty is far more than the re- sult of cremes and sprays. We must move beyond these tempo- rary remedies and potions to find the source of a greater beauty within each of us. We must be- come conscious of our actions and be responsible for them. We must learn to show concern for others as well as for our own ex- istence. We must work towards a more permanent beauty; one which cannot be washed away. Only then will we come close to Rebecca ... and become truly beautiful.
