we should emphasize we are in-
vesting in the autonomous re-
gions in the West Bank and Gaza
Strip and not endorsing ideas of
the establishment of a Palestin-
ian state," said Jeff Kaye, com-
munity shaliach with the
Michigan/Israel Connection.
Aside from that, the meeting
went well as the 15 members of
the contingent began their re-
cruitment of 25 local investors to
initiate or expand businesses in
the Palestinian controlled re-
gions.
"This is more for local business
owners with contacts there who
are pursuing interests in part-
nerships," said David Gad-Harf,
executive director of the Jewish
Community Council.
Richard Corson, an interna-
tional trade representative
with the United States Depart-
ment of Commerce, said meet-
ings the following day went well
with at least one company hav-
ing a possible business agreement
and others continuing negotia-
tions.
At least two Jewish business
owners were looking for potential
partnerships at the meeting, Mr.
Corson said
"It looks very promising," he
said.
The Palestinian businesspeo-
ple, representing everything from
fast-food restaurants to an eye
hospital, are part of the growing
business climate which resulted
from the signing of the peace ac-
cord in September 1993.
"It is so simple," said Terry
Ahwal, an executive member of
the Washington, D.C., -based
Builders for Peace, a group found-
ed to foster investment in the
Palestinian controlled territories.
"They need small things, not
large companies. They need the
basics because they are starting
from scratch."
Dr. Ray Genkins, assistant
dean of professional development
at Wayne State University, said
investment by the American com-
munity is essential to continuing
the peace process. Without de-
velopment, economic disparity
and thus friction will continue,
he said.
Wayne State University's busi;
ness school is setting up devel-
opment counseling centers in
Hebron and in Amman, Jordan,
to help the Palestinians expand
their businesses.
"They cannot survive in their
own communities. They have to
branch out to survive," Dr. Genk-
ins said.
However, some at the social
gathering speculated that the
vast majority of the United States
investment would be coming from
Arab business owners.
"The people who are coming
here are more interested in doing
business with people from their
own countries," said Ahmad
Ezzeddine, a business counselor
with Wayne State University. ❑
