efore 1987, Larry Lax, like
so many of metro Detroit's

phone calls from Allied
Jewish Campaign solicitors with
a dose of caution, doubt and con-
fusion.
"Before 1987, I was not very

with the Jewish corn-

munity," he says. "I didn't know
where my money was going."
Today, seven years later, Mr.
Lax initiates face-to-face Cam-
paign solicitations and has tak-
en on lay responsibilities with the
Agency for Jewish Education.
The turning point for this on-the-
periphery Jew? In a word:
Hadracha.
