"I use integrated Hebrew and
English in my classroom to teach
my students so it will be inter-
esting to see how the teachers
there teach Chinese and Eng-
lish," she said.
To prepare her students for
the trip, she employed a bulletin
board adapted from a popular
children's game, "Where in the
World in Carmen San Diego?".
The board includes a map of
China, Chinese numbers and the
country's flag. She read Chinese
folk tales to her students and
shared a meal of rice and stir-
fried vegetables with her second-
grade class.
"I thought it was important to
tie this in with my classes," she
said.
After her departure, the
lessons are continuing. Students
are tracking her movements on
a map and are counting down the
days until she returns Nov. 7.
She is further involving her
class by taking their drawings to
Chinese students. She hopes a
pen-pal exchange will form as a
result.
"The children can learn so
much from this," she said.
Alex Orley, a first-grader at
Hillel, said he has learned a lot
about China through the stories
and geography lessons.
"I think it is nice that Mrs.
Charlip is going to China," he
said. "This has been fun." D
Concert To Recall
Pre-War Germany

Frank Theyleg was looking for a
monthly get-together. He never
dreamed it would lead to a Nov.
6 concert with broad implications
for German Americans and Jew-
ish Americans of German de-
scent.
Mr. Theyleg's Stammtisch
group, German-speaking Jewish
immigrants of the 1930s and '40s,
and AGENDA, Americans and
Germans Embracing both Na-
tionalities in Dialogue and Asso-
ciation based in Warren, are
sponsoring the concert.
The event at the Hyatt Re-
gency Dearborn will feature mu-
sic banned by the Nazis in Adolf
Hitler's Germany. It will include
Jewish composers, such as
Robert Stolz and Kurt Weill, and
American jazz tunes performed
by German-speaking musicians.
The second half of the program
will have Ira Kogan singing Yid-
dish folk tunes.
"We can't change the past, but
we can change the future," Mr.
Theyleg said. An engineer who
