"Women in the Bible: Images in
Clay," an exhibit by local artist
Sarah Hartman, will be on view
in Temple Beth El's Shapero Mu-
seum Oct. 25 through Dec. 8. The
12 works depict 15 women from
the Bible as seen through the
imaginative eye of a woman of to-
day.
The artist has used two dis-
tinct methods in her portrayal of

Lllith and Eve
the women. Three of the sculp-
tures are raku, a traditional
Japanese method of firing Ce-
ramics. The other nine pieces are
fired clay painted with patinas
developed by the artist from var-
ious oxides and paints. All pre-
sent the subjects in a new and
dramatic light.
Sarah Hartman has been an
artist all her life, beginning with
her childhood studies in drawing
and painting with her grandfa-
ther, the artist Simon Rosen. She
holds a bachelor of fine arts de-
gree from Wayne State Univer-
sity in figurative sculpture and
life drawing. Her works have
been exhibited in five one-woman
shows in Seattle, Wash.; New
Haven, Conn.; and Oak Park
They have been seen as well in
group exhibitions in Michigan,
Rhode Island, Connecticut and
Washington and Copenhagen,
Denmark.
"Women in the Bible: Images
in Clay" will be open to the pub-
lic during regular temple hours,
Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. -
5 p.m. and Sunday mornings, 9
a.m. through noon. There is no
charge for the exhibit.

Children's Art
On Display

The Cultural Arts Division of
Southfield Parks and Recreation
will sponsor an exhibit of art
work produced by area young-
sters as part of the "Children
Helping Children Art contest"
through Oct. 28.
The exhibit will be held in the
Civic Center Gallery, 2600 Ever-
green Road.
