RUTH ROVNER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

I

n a foreign city,finding a syn-
agogue can be quite and ad-
venture. It may involve
following a complicated route
on a map or taking a tram, bus
or taxi to an unfamiliar destina-
tion.
Occasionally, the search also
turns into an unexpected plea-
sure, as it did for me on a recent
visit to Geneva. This was one of
the few times during my travels
that I reached a synagogue on
foot by following scenic lake and
river promenades.
Starting out from my hotel, the
Metropole, which was located on
the right bank of Lake Geneva, I
took a leisurely stroll along Gene-
va's lovely lakeside quais.
In this Swiss city surrounded
by water, Lake Geneva and the
Rhone River are adjoining bod-
ies of water. So I was soon walk-
ing along the river, passing its
varied and picturesque bridges.

"We take a very modern and
open-minded approach," said Mr.
Masson.That's why visitors from
Reform and Conservative con-
gregations in their home coun-
tries often find their way to the
modern riverfront synagogue and
adjoining Jewish Community
Center.
First, they usually stop in the
lobby to admire two striking
sculptures by Jewish artists. One
is a bronze wall sculpture which
is actually 26 different pieces —
all the letters of the Hebrew al-
phabet — each one intricately
sculpted into the shape of a bird.
It's the work of Peter Hayden,
a Geneva sculptor who is also a
member of Beit Gil. "When he

PARKING AND ENTRANCE IN REAR

A footbridge leads to Belt Gil in Geneva.

When I came to a scenic foot-
bridge, I crossed and continued
my promenade along the other
side of the river bank until I
reached Quai du Seujet.
Across the street, facing the
river, was #12, a modern build-
ing. It is here that Geneva's only
liberal congregation has its quar-
ters on two floors of the building.
At the entrance, Eliel Masson
was waiting to greet me. Mr.
Masson, a longtime member of
Beit Gil, often is on hand to greet
visitors who come to Geneva's
only liberal congregation. (The
city's three others are all Ortho-
dox.)
In Switzerland, liberal con-
gregations — equivalent to Re-
form in the United States — are
rare; the only other one is in
Zurich.
Affiliated with the World
Union for Progressive Judaism,

working with letters, he decid-
ed to do a major design of Hebrew
letters and their meaning," said
Mr. Masson. The artist even
wrote a book about his involve-
ment in the project, titled Ele-
mentary Knowledge: A Story of
the Creation of the Hebrew Al-
phabet.
The other sculpture, a grace-
ful and curving white piece, uses
two intertwined Hebrew letters
for its form. Homage To Pierre
Wohl is the work of Anna Wais-
man, a prominent Parisian artist
who has some of her works ex-
hibited in the Guggenheim Mu-
seum in New York City.
Near the lobby is the sanctu-
ary, which seats 200. This, too, is
artistically designed. Created by
Swiss architect Erik Barth, it is
entirely circular, with the rows
of pews deliberately arranged to
resemble a large menorah.
